The Golden Paragraph Challenge

For Parents who are looking for ways to motivate and encourage their Year 12 students please ask them about participation in the Golden Paragraph Challenge.

A great way to improve skills and maintain momentum as we race towards the conclusion of Year 12.

As of Week 4, a new and valuable initiative will be unfolding on Tuesday afternoon’s between 3.30pm and 4.30pm: ‘The Golden Paragraph Club’. This will gather enthusiastic and hardworking students to attack the Unit 4 Outcome 1, Reading & Comparing Task for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, and Geraldine Brooks’ Year of Wonders.

To gain entry into these exclusive workshops, you must demonstrate necessary competency through the construction of a solitary paragraph for this task, (as per the criteria below) – each week! What constitutes competency is described in the criteria below and will increase across the three week challenge.

Our challenge for you is to invest in this outcome, and work hard to improve.

Students who can complete all three weeks will be invited to an exclusive lunch - inclusive of a ‘Q & A Session’ with members of the Senior English Team and guests. Assured invitation to this lunch will be incumbent on your acquisition of the required 3 signatures on your ‘Golden Paragraph Challenge Passport’ (overleaf).

You are not required to direct your analysis at a specific prompt, however, suggested areas of focus could include the following:

  • geographical & historical considerations
  • the impact of religious authority
  • gender roles in 17th Century societies
  • human responses to situations of crisis
  • consequences of fear riddled communities
  • hysteria and mob mentality
  • social values
  • sacrifice

The rules:

  1. Each week, you must submit to your teacher a new paragraph. It should be a new exploration of the task – not a re-working of the previous week’s entry (paragraph).
  2. Whilst you will remain anonymous as the author, you must be prepared to have your paragraph analysed and dissected. This will be done constructively.
  3. Your teacher must be given timely opportunity to read and evaluate in relation to the below criteria.
  4. If your paragraph is satisfactory in relation to the progressive assessment schedule, your teacher will sign you off on the ‘Golden Paragraph Challenge’ Passport overleaf - so that you can attend the workshop.
  5. You must acquire all three signatures and retain your signed passport, as well as attend the three workshops (we will take names), in order to gain entry into the final lunch and Q & A session.

Tournament of the Minds 2019

This year students from the College Accelerated program in Year 7/8 – HALO, participated in Tournament of the Minds. Of the four possible challenges , students selected to compete in both the Arts and STEM areas.

STEM - the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) principles provides an integrated approach for students to deepen their conceptual understanding, and use their creative and critical thinking skills to solve the challenges within an authentic context. There may be additional materials required to create a physical model to help demonstrate the Challenge solution.

The Arts - this Challenge asks students to research aspects of visual and performing arts and will require students to apply performing arts skills in their solutions. This may involve existing or original works of art, theatre, dance, music and song.
