Lake Illawarra High School Pink Stumps Day

On Friday the 25th of October Lake Illawarra High School engaged in our 3rd annual Pink Stumps Cricket Day. It was amazing to witness so many members of the school dressed in pink throughout the day. At recess the SRC sold cupcakes, jelly cups, rocky road, finger buns, pink hairspray and zinc, the Clontarf Academy ran a BBQ at lunch.

In the afternoon Students and Staff were treated to a cricket match, which featured a pink ball and pink stumps to go with the theme of the day. It was a great day where all money raised has been donated to the Jane McGrath Foundation who research breast cancer, and provide nurses to people affected in rural areas. Looking forward to next year’s addition.

HEaRd Fundraising

Year 9 girls participating in the HEaRd program were visited recently by a representative from SAHSSI, Supported Accommodation & Homelessness Services Shoalhaven Illawarra. The girls are running a Donation Drive until the end of November and Sophie-May, the representative from SAHSSI, was very impressed by the ideas and passion from our students. The girls have been working hard to put up posters, speak on assembly, and check the donations in the Donation Drive bin.

The girls are running a bake sale on Friday, to raise money and make ‘Pamper Packs’ for the homeless women SAHSSI assists. ‘Pamper Packs’ include toiletries, feminine products, tooth paste and brushes, hair ties and brushes, shampoo, conditioner, and more. Mursal, one of our lovely HEaRd students, has been working hard creating her own Pamper Packs for the women in refugees and temporary accommodation. Congratulations to all of our girls for your hard work and dedication.

Don’t forget if you have any unused or unopened goods/products/items at home that we are taking donations in our Donation Bin, located outside of the Wellbeing Hub or in the Front Office.

Thank you all for your support! These donations will help make a difference and reduce homelessness in our local community.

Sun Safety and Lake Illawarra High School Sun Safe Ambassadors

Lake Illawarra High School have allocated 2 student ambassadors responsible for promoting sun safety at school, home and during the holidays. We are currently delivering a number of evidenced base strategies

across the school to promote sun safe behaviours within our community including students and their

families.

Meet our sun safe ambassadors Adam Young and Ruben Anthony.

Both students are doing an outstanding job at ensuring our school is a sun safe community. The boys have delivered presentations to all of Year 7, at lunch times they move around the school and provide sunscreen to student, do advertising campaigns around the school and designed modern hats to be handed out to students in 2020.

We are very proud of the boys and want to continue delivering the sun safe message throughout 2020.

Year 7 CPR First Aid

Year 7 students were provided free First Aid and CPR workshops in conjunction with the focus on a safe, healthy and active summer.

The PDHPE faculty are delivering initiatives based on teaching students the skills to make safe decisions and promote their own personal safety and health during each holiday break.

Our aim was to develop student skills to be active and informed citizens and take an independent approach to managing their health and safety.

Year 7 and 8 Aquatics

This year students in Years 7 and 8 participated in 6 weeks of aquatics based activities. The students had an unbelievable time going to the beach every Tuesday and learning some essential lifesaving skills they can use on a lifelong basis. The students learnt variation in surf conditions from tides, wave variations and sandbank/rip structures that change daily. Each day they were involved in the following:

 rip identification, still water assessment and basic survival skills and paddling a foam surfboard and catching

waves

 Surf negotiation, body surfing and rip escapes on foam surfboards

 Group relays and team building and board rescues

Check out the video that sums up the fun!!!

Duke of Edinburgh – Bronze and silver Qualifying Journey

Lake Illawarra High School’s Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Journey took place on Wednesday

6th November through to Friday 8th November. Included in this Qualifying Journey was a 3-day hike (2 days for bronze) within the Royal National Park and the Heathcote National Park.

Throughout this hike, the students explored various tracks that led to many key attractions,

such as Coutts, Kingfisher pools, Mirang Pools, Kangaroo Creek, Audley Weir and Uloola

falls.

The Bronze group (Andre Tauteka, Cameron Potter, Liam Kelly, Max Brislane, Justin Costa

and Tyler Stevenson) hiked almost 40km in 2 days! This was a tremendous effort considering they each were carrying about 20kg packs in quite warm weather.

The Silver Group (Mikayla Amos, Miranda Percival, Hayden Chalmers and Adam Young) hiked 55km in 3 days – again, a remarkable achievement for these students.

The Duke of Edinburgh award has given our LIHS students the opportunity to learn about themselves and others in a range of challenging environments. Each day they pitched their tents, made their meals, cleaned the facilities, navigated through the tracks and engaged in environmentally sustainable behaviours.

I am very proud of each of these students and I hope that they can incorporate the valuable experiences and skills learnt throughout this trip into their everyday lives.

Holiday Reading Challenge

G’day everyone

As we start approaching the end of the term we at the library start really thinking about what holiday reads we could sink our teeth into.

Now I know there are those of you out there that “don’t read” but before you shut your mind to this idea, I want you to think about this.

If you read for 20 minutes a day, not including weekends, by the end of the 5 week holidays you would have read for over 8 hours!!!

To put that into perspective, the original Harry Potter novel would take someone who doesn’t read a lot roughly 6 hours to finish

Now add weekends into that. If you read 20 minutes a day, every day, you would have racked up almost 12 hours of reading throughout the holidays.

That’s enough to get through most 400 page paperback novels.

So how about it? Why not take up the Library Challenge and commit to reading for 20 minutes every day this holidays. If you come to the library we can pair you up with a marvelous book that is guaranteed to delight you for those precious 20 minutes each day.

I look forward to seeing everybody before the end of the school year to help you pick the perfect book.

Cheers, Mr Nairn
