Class locations for 2020

It has finally been confirmed that we will receive a brand new portable to complete the "U shape" at the back of the school. However, I am skeptical that it will be ready for Day 1 next year!

"Here is your permission to let kids be bored on the holidays"

By Caroline Zielinkski

December 13, 2019

As the holidays loom, and desperate parents scour the internet for ideas of what to do with their kids over the long summer break, perhaps it’s time to reconsider if children really need to always be doing something.

Experts say children – just like adults – need time to themselves. They need to switch off from the bombardment of the outside world and be free to daydream, pursue their own thoughts and discover what makes them tick.

The best way to do that? Give them time to be bored.

“Children should be taught that feeling inattentive and impatient because they are unoccupied or lack interest in the current activity is an opportunity to promote the use of the imagination and to think creatively,” says Dr Janine Cooper, a behavioural psychologist and founder of Everyday Neuro, an organisation seeking to enhance understanding of neuroscience and neuropsychology.

“Boredom can allow children to be more aware of their environment, and to learn to be self- entertained. It encourages learning, innovation and to have fun at a time of life when fantasy storytelling can transform a child’s world.”

This need to entertain children means parents often suffer guilt when their child expresses feelings of boredom. Yet, while it may seem that chucking on the telly or handing over the iPad is the best solution (and for some who desperately need a moment of quiet, it is), there is value in leaving the kids to go and entertain themselves.

Giving children time to meander, imagine and play (whether it’s by themselves or with other children) is an invaluable gift, and will leave both parents and children happier overall – even if, at least in the short term, it means putting up with their complaining!
