State Cross Country

The State Cross Country was held at Bundoora Park on Thursday the 19th of July. The following students represented the college after qualifying at the Region event: Harry Norman, Angus Norman, Jemima Wilson, Sienna Koh, Olivia Henry, Mia Busch, Lucy Fairhurst, Jack Stelfox, Thomas Dellow, Ruby D’Arcy.

An amazing effort to reach this level of competition.  All students put in a great effort on the day and represented the college with a lot of pride.

Highlights of the day included Harry Norman’s second place in the 17-20 Yr boys race. An incredible performance.

And also the Under 14 girls Jemima Wilson, Sienna Koh, Olivia Henry and Mia Busch – State Champions!!

What a fantastic performance, well done girls.

2018 Pierre De Coubertin award

On Friday the 22nd of June, at a ceremony held at the MCG, Harry Norman was presented with the 2018 Pierre De Coubertin award.

This award is a joint initiative of the Victorian Olympic Council and the Department of Education and training. It is named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games and aims to recognise students who demonstrate attributes consistent with the fundamental aims of the Olympic movement, with a particular emphasis on participation and commendable sporting behaviour.

Harry is an incredibly worthy recipient of this award. He is an amazing young athlete, always giving his best and encouraging others to do the same. Well done Harry.

The 22nd of June was a special night for the entire Norman family. As Harry was receiving his award upstairs, down below in the Olympic Museum, his great uncle, Peter Norman, was being recognised with the Australian Olympic Committees Order of Merit. It was being presented to his family as unfortunately Peter Norman passed away in 2006.

Peter Norman was the Australian sprinter who shared the podium with Tommie Smith and John Carlos when the two Americans raised their fists in a human rights protest at the 1968 Olympics. Many of you will recognise the image. This award, exactly 50 years since those events in Mexico acknowledge Peter Norman for his grace, his athletic achievement (he still holds the national record for the 200m of 20.06), his decency and his courage.

Congratulations to the entire Norman family. A very special night.

Junior Girls Footy

On Monday the 24th of June, the junior girls football team competed at the Eastern Region quarter finals. It was a fantastic day of football. We won our first two games against Vermont and Box Hill High School. Unfortunately, we lost our last game against Lilydale High school. It was a tough, low scoring game which went right down to the wire. A nail biter for the spectators. Final score was 2 points Lilydale to 1 point Ringwood. Great game of footy, but disappointing to lose. Well done to all the girls on their efforts on the day. They tackled hard, bumped hard, displayed some awesome skills and excellent sportsmanship.

We look forward to next year and going one step further.
