Respectful Relationships Initiative

On Friday 22nd June staff and parents gathered to unveil a portrait series commissioned by the Respectful Relationships Initiative and created by Michael Kent. Each faculty was asked to select a prominent woman from within their curriculum area. The intent of the project is to inspire our cohort, particularly the young women, and reaffirm the positive impact that women have had in all sectors of society. The following women were selected to represent each of the faculty areas:

Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson is an African-American Mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. manned spaceflights.

Ellyse Perry is one of Australia’s best athletes. She holds the rare distinction of being a dual international. She made her debut for both the Australian cricket team (Southern Stars) and the Australian women's national soccer team (Matildas) at the age of 16. She is the youngest person to represent Australia in cricket and the first Australian to have appeared in both cricket and soccer World Cups. She has seen the increased growth in women sport and in her ambassador role with Cricket Australia has been heavily involved in promoting women’s sport and ensuring there are opportunities for girls to play sport. Her talent, achievements, humility and dedication and passion for sport make her a fantastic role model for young girls and women in Sport.

Marie Curie, Scientist, was born in Warsaw in 1867. Marie, was a physicist and chemist who played a major role in the discovery of radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win the prize twice, and the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences, Chemistry and Physics. Marie Curie died at the age of 66 in 1934 in France of aplastic anaemia from constant experimenting with radioactivity.

Rachel Perkins is a woman of the Arrernte and Kalkadoon nations. She is an inspirational Australian at the forefront of the filmmaking industry. Her continuing body of work as a screenwriter, producer, director, board member and festival director embodies her passion and skill in bringing Australian Indigenous stories to the world. Raised in an activist family, her unique perspective invites audiences to consider concepts of identity, respect and social justice.

The English faculty have chosen Rachel Perkins as our iconic role model as her life story imbues the Australian spirit of passionate expression. We study her film ‘Mabo’ in year 10 English and use various other texts as resources such as ‘Bran Nue Dae’. Her body of work provides students a forum to develop critical thinking and analytical skills.

Julia Gillard, our first female Prime Minister, served as an inspiration to Australians, more specifically Australian women and girls. She led some of the most significant reforms in Australian history - including the Gonski education reforms, the NDIS, and the Royal Commission into child sex abuse. Despite some deeply degrading and humiliating treatment from both the political sphere and beond, Julia Gillard remained gracious and defiant. She declared her own belief that her experience in leading the way would make it easier for Australian women who become Prime Minister in the future. Julia Gillard, representing the Humanities faculty, was informed of the portrait created in her honor and sent the following message to RSC.

From the Chaplain

What an awesome start to term3! Recently we held a morning tea for all our mentors and students involved in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Mentoring program. It was great to see all the wonderful connections that have been made between the students and their volunteer mentors. The morning tea had a great community feel and there was lots to celebrate over good food together.

One of our students who has had a mentor for over 3 years spoke of how much the program has been beneficial for him and his mentor equally spoke of how much he enjoyed the relationship and the opportunity to give back. It is a great reminder that when we give kindness, it is never one way and we also benefit greatly.

We so appreciate the support of our Principal and Wellbeing team who are so supportive of our program. It was great to have them attend our morning tea as well as Diana and Taryn from Big Brothers/Big Sisters and              Emily and Carrie from the Wellbeing Inclusion team in the Education Department.  Looking forward to what the rest of this term has in store! Thanks Gail

Careers

Welcome back to term 3!

We have had a busy start to the term, with eager students coming in to chat to us about subjects and course selection.

This is an important time for year 10, 11 and 12 students who need to make some important decisions regarding subjects and courses.  It is important that students appropriately research their courses and seek help if they are unsure.

Year 10 students completed their work experience and we were happy with the responses from both the employers and students.

On the 7th August, the Herald/Sun will be publishing the prerequisites for students hoping to begin their studies in 2021. Although students will also be sent an electronic copy , the lift–out in the Herald/Sun will provide a wealth of information. We advise all students in Year 10 to get a copy of the paper on the 7th August.

Mock Interviews

Reminders have been sent to senior students advising them of the opportunity to participate in mock interviews. This provides the students to get feedback and helpful hints. This would be particularly helpful for students who are planning to apply for courses for which there is an interview or for students applying for casual and part time jobs. Please sent your Resumes to hdoherty@ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au by the end of the week.
