The Joy of Anticipation
Our staff devotions this term have centred on St Paul’s letter to the Romans. It has been an excellent opportunity for staff to study, reflect on and share their thoughts about the message of this wonderful book of the New Testament.
The main theme of the book is justification by faith: we are made right with God when we put our faith in Jesus. It is helpful to personalise the word “justified” to mean “just as if I’d” never sinned, because that is exactly what God’s forgiving grace means to those who truly believe.
This is captured powerfully in the second verse of our school hymn:
“When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin.
Because the sinless Saviour died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.”
Our faith in Jesus gives us the joy of anticipation: joy for today, tomorrow and eternity.
