The Santos Science Experience

Are you a student or a parent of a student currently in Year 9 or 10? Do you or does your daughter have an interest in an aspect of Science, such as marine science, engineering, forensics or sports medicine? Would this student like to get a taste of university life over 3 or 4 days this year or early next year during the school holidays? If so, please consider the Santos Science Experience!

The experience is a 1, 3 or 4 day opportunity in the school holiday period to participate in experiments and engage in a range of fascinating and fun science experiences. The program is held in over 35 tertiary institutions, each with its own focus. The program offers the chance to meet with other students, and the work students do over these days will provide insights into possible careers in the science, technology and engineering fields. Applicants will also experience first hand life at some of the universities that you may be considering applying to for future studies.

Victorian opportunities are held at the Queenscliff Marine and Discovery Centre, RMIT, Swinburne University, Federation University Ballarat and Gippsland, University of Melbourne, Dookie and Swinburne University, KIOSC, Wantirna Campus.

The cost is $65 for the single program at the Queenscliff Marine and Discovery Centre, $190 for a 3-day program or $260 for the 4-day programs that are offered interstate. The program is also supported by Rotary, making scholarships possible for students to pursue at a local Rotary club. For contact details of your local Rotary club please call 13004ROTARY or www.rotary.org.au.

There are no restrictions on who can participate in this experience. Simply click on the link HERE to look through the different programs offered, read more about past experiences and complete the online registration. Registrations are now open and the number of places available at each location is continually revised, so have a look and think about applying!

Big Science Competition

On Thursday 20 May, 62 students from Year 7 to 10 participated in the 'Big Science Competition' online. Thank you to all of these students for taking the initiative to self-register for the competition. We await the results which should not be far away!

Around the Science Labs

Although the recent return to remote learning is not what we would have hoped for, students have been very busy in the labs this term.

Year 7

Year 7 students have made different types of mixtures and investigated how to separate mixtures according to differences in the properties of each substance.

Year 8

Year 8 students have explored how the circulatory and respiratory systems work effectively together. They have looked at the structure of a sheep’s heart and compared it to their own.

Year 9

Year 9 students have investigated how the nervous system and endocrine systems control our responses to the environment. Students have looked at the structure of a bull’s eye in their studies.

Year 10

Year 10 students have examined the patterns and beauty of the Periodic Table of the elements. In doing so, they have seen the proof of the internal structure of the atom through spectacular flame tests! Certainly, an absolute favourite prac of students and staff alike!
