Inter-school Readers Cup

Readers Cup is a fun competition conducted each year by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, Queensland Branch.  It involves reading assorted books then answering questions about the books at an evening event.  Reader’s Cup challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team, and continue developing a love of reading.  It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level, similar to sporting competitions, and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.  Typically, about fifteen teams take part in the Brisbane North Regional competition of which we are a part.  This year the event was hosted by Padua College. 

This year Mount Alvernia College was represented by Chelsea Gledhill, Taskin Bari, Miranda Spark, Acacia Stockermans, and Rachel Feltrin.  These students read five novels, took notes on the books, and met every week in break time to quiz each other about the books.  They have worked independently and diligently and are wonderful representatives of the College.

The titles pictured are those read by all teams in the regional competition.  There are some great choices here that we would recommend to all Years 7 and 8 students.

On the night of the event, competition was fierce.  The Mount Alvernia team put in a great performance to finish fifth overall, scoring 40 points.  Only three points separated fifth place and the winning team, which scored 43 points.  Overall, it was a wonderful experience working with this team of reading superstars.
