Tasmanian Catholic Youth Festival

Coming together with students from most southern Catholic Colleges, a group of Senior School students attended the Tasmanian Catholic Youth Festival at Guilford Young College Glenorchy last week.

The day began with an engaging session with Father Rob Galea who talked about his faith journey and shared his internationally recognised contemporary Christian music.

After morning tea, students chose from a variety of workshops on topics such as ‘Encountering Christ in the Arts’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar: the Gamer, the Sportsman and the Music Lover’.

The day ended with prayer and singing, again lead by Father Rob.

Students found the festival engaging, interesting and even challenging at times. Many thanks go to our Youth Minister, Belle Young, who organised our participation in the day.

A morning for our mums

An early Mother's Day celebration brought many families to the College Green on Tuesday 4 May for delicious warm breakfast treats.

Thank you to everyone for coming together to show our mothers and the special women in our lives how much they mean to us.

Special thanks to our wonderful helpers who volunteered their time on the day. If you'd be happy to volunteer at a future event, we'd love to hear from you.

Year 12 students also had the opportunity to spoil their leading ladies with a breakfast they hosted on Friday 7 May. Prefect forCommunity Relations, Caitlin McDonald, has provided the below summary:

Last Friday, the Mother's Day Breakfast for Year 12 and their mums or special female figures was held, raising money for the Prefect charity, The Hobart Women's Shelter.

The event was a huge success with a big thank you going to all the businesses that sponsored and donated prizes, along with staff who donated their time.

A special mention to Jemma Harris (Year 12) who was lucky enough to win the raffle!

Tidal beasts in all their glory

It's official, Year 7 Visual Arts students and SMC Art Club members have taken their art to the North West!

Students created a selection of quirky, marine-inspired artworks, which are featured in the Devonport Regional Gallery's 'Exquisite Tidal Beasts' mural project.

If you're heading up that way, be sure to stop by and admire the mural in person.

Students learn art of dumpling making

Shelley Macleod's Senior classes had fun learning how to make delicious Chinese dumplings (jiaozi) from scratch recently.

One of the most popular and commonly eaten dishes in China, jioazi are crescent-shaped and normally filled with meat or vegetables.

The students made the pastry (skins) and tried their hand at folding the dumplings with the help of Alison Lowe and our volunteer teacher, Miss Song.

Year 7 Science goes off with a bang

Bath bombs away! Students in Year 7 have been busy recently creating scented bath bombs in their Science class.

Bath bombs are made from a mixture of citric acid, soda bicarbonate, food colouring, essence and vegetable oil.

The creative process had direct links to the class' current topic of mixtures, resulting in delightful fragrances and squeaky clean fun!

The great debate: summer is better than winter!

Our Year 6 debating team kicked off the Junior school debating competition hosted by The Hutchins School last week. Very convincing arguments and rebuttals were made by Lucy Pinelli, Beatrix Clarke, Lucinda Bakes and Millie Barnard (Year 6) for the debate topic of, 'summer is better than winter', against The Friends School. St Mary's won by 3 points. Congratulations to you all on a wonderful first debate! Thank you to coach Mrs Caroline Wilson-Haffenden for her expert preparation.
