2021 Tournament of the Minds Competition

Over the past five years Moama Anglican Grammar has taken part in the Tournament of the Minds Competition (TOM). In TOM we compete in NSW and our regional final location is Wagga Wagga, NSW. This has been a very successful program and well supported by the participating students and their families, with many teams progressing to NSW Finals in Sydney. In 2019 the Primary Language Literature Team placed with ‘Honours’ at State level, an outstanding achievement from approximately 700 teams across NSW.

TOM is a problem-solving program for teams of seven students. This program offers an extension opportunity for students who excel in one or more of the following areas. The teams are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines:

  • The Arts
  • Language Literature
  • STEM
  • Social Sciences

TOM is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

We will begin the TOM program during Term 2 2021. The program will operate from Monday 7 June (week 8) after school from 3:15 to 4:30pm and will continue at this time and day into Term 3. No training over the Queens Birthday Long weekend. There may also be a need for some lunch time sessions during Term 3.

There will also be two Sunday rehearsals.

  • Sunday 25 July 11:00am-3:00pm.
  • Sunday 15 August 11:00am-3:00pm.

Teams of seven students (maximum of four students from one year level) are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge (during Term 3) without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. It is anticipated that two primary teams of seven students will be entered for 2021. Please note we can only accept a maximum of 14 students from Year 3 to 6 for this competition.

Please bear in mind that the competition day is Sunday 22 August in Wagga Wagga, held at Sturt Public School. Your child must be committed to attending on this date. A bus will be provided for students, or private travel arrangements may be made. Further progress to Sydney may be possible depending on results at regional level.

If you feel that your child would enjoy participating in the Tournament of Minds competition and can commit to the competition day, after school, Sunday and some lunch time sessions please fill in the attached expression of interest and return to the Primary School office by Friday 21 May at the latest.

Final team selection will be based on following criteria in consultation with classroom teachers:

Uses a diverse range of problem-solving techniques when undertaking school activities.
Reliable participant in classroom activities and any extracurricular involvement inclusive of making afterschool or lunch time commitments
Engages willingly in challenging tasks and persists when faced with setbacks. Demonstrates consistent desire to succeed and work towards set goals.
The ability to work with a range of students in a respectful and encouraging manner.

The teams will be finalised by Friday 28 May and all students and parents will be informed of the outcome of their expression of interest.

Please bear in mind that the TOM program is subject to change considering relevant State and Federal COVID-19 regulations. We will keep involved families informed throughout the TOM Programs and provide updates when necessary.

Code Camp

You can elevate your child’s coding skills these school holidays from the comfort of your own home. Select a week of the school holidays and your child will receive 2 hours of exciting and engaging coding activities to complete anytime between 9:30 am - 3:30 pm each day. This means you don’t have to complete each day's content at the same time each day. It’s flexible. Code when it suits your child’s schedule! Our live tutor team will be online Monday - Friday to help your kids code and create their own game over the course of the week. And for the first time ever, your child can design, code and create their own DC Super Hero game.
