Years One/Two News

Fraction Fun!

The current focus for Year One/Two students in Maths is fractions. The students are learning about dividing things into equal parts, and are exploring what this looks like with both objects (such as a sandwich, a pizza or a block of chocolate) and collections (such as a bag of marbles, a set of coloured pencils or a group of counters). They are discovering that two equal parts are called halves, and four equal parts are called quarters.

During this unit, you can support your child's learning by helping them to discover real-world situations at home where fractions are used. For example, when cooking we measure with half and quarter cups, and when sharing a pack of tiny teddies with a sibling we would want to make sure each person gets exactly half. Where else are fractions used at home?
