Mr Luke Caplick

What a magnificent way to finish our AIC Rugby and Football seasons! Saturday provided a perfect winters day at Marist where we hosted 64 games of rugby and football. Not only did the super-reunion Old Boys weekend provide a wonderful atmosphere that our boys enjoyed but our success across all games was extraordinary. We didn’t lose any games of Rugby against St Pat’s and our 1st Football finished the day with an unlikely premiership. Due to us accommodating so many fixtures the normal 12:30pm kick-off for Football was pushed back to 1:30pm which gave us the luxury of hearing other 1st XI results as our game was progressing. We knew that if Padua drew or beat Villanova then our game verse St Pat’s became a must-win for the premiership. Thankfully Padua did the right thing by us, winning 3-2 against Villanova.  Word passed around that there was a live premiership game on Cameron Oval and the hill filled quickly. In what was a magic experience, our boys played extremely well winning 4-1 to take out the coveted AIC 1st XI Football premiership.

On top of this magnificent feat by our 1st XI Football team, Marist College Ashgrove took out the triple aggregate sports win for Term 2 sports. Winning the aggregate in Cross-Country, Football and Rugby. A wonderful achievement for our Term 2 sports, with chess finishing 2nd, just two points behind SLC in the aggregate. This is a credit to all boys who participated in these sporting programs but also to the coaches and coordinators who give up so much time to ensure the boys were enjoying themselves whilst at the same time, implementing a program of success. Managing sports programs as large as we have at the College requires an enormous investment from our staff. Cross-Country had over 150 students involved over the 14 weeks of preparation. Football catered for 36 teams and Rugby had 38. The fact that we can provide for this many teams and still develop our top-end talent for success reflects the work done by our coordinators. Thank you to Brendan Furdek (Cross-Country), David Miles (Rugby) and Jamie Morgan (Football) for your dedication to these respective programs.

Rugby League

The end of our rugby season marks the start of our AIC Rugby League season and we have hit the ground running this week with skills sessions for each age group on McMahon Oval as the boys prepare for their trials on Saturday.

Skills-based training sessions conducted by Shane Morris from Norths Devils are occurring at the following time/s;

Primary

  • 2:20pm – 3:10pm: Wednesday 16 June – Year 5
  • 2:20pm – 3:10pm: Friday 11 June – Year 6

Secondary

  • 3:30pm – 4:45pm: Tuesday 15 June – Year 8
  • 3:30pm – 4:45pm: Wednesday 16 June – Year 9
  • 3:30pm – 4:45pm: Thursday 17 June – Year 10

All boys who wish to trial for Rugby league must attend these sessions.

Confraternity Squad (Open Age group) has been selected based on Rugby Season to ensure preparations can occur for the carnival. At this stage, we are hoping to have a 2nd XIII included in the AIC Competition for the first. If this is approved later this week by AIC then a trial period will be allocated for the open age group at the start of Term 3.

All other trial games for respective age groups will occur this Saturday morning, June 19 with the following format;

TimeMcMahon OvalHayden Oval
8:00am – 9:30am Year 7Year 5
9:30am – 11:00amYear 8Year 6
11:00am – 12:30pm Year 10Year 9

At these trials, it is envisaged that boys will be put into teams to play in 3 x 20 minutes trial games. At the conclusion of these trials, all coaches are asked to narrow their squad down to 20 - 25 boys. These boys will be asked to continue training in Week 1 of Term 3 with trials games against Padua and Iona on the first weekend back in Term 3 (Saturday 17 July) to help further narrow the squads down for the official AIC season.

Training for all teams will be on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 3:30pm – 4:45pm during Term 3, commencing on Tuesday 13 July, and will look like this:

  • McMahon Oval – 1st XIII and Year 10 (possibly 2nd XIII as well)
  • Hayden Oval – Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7
  • Cameron Oval – Year 8 and Year 9

Hopefully, that gives you some understanding of the direction we are heading with our Rugby League Program.

Football Wrap Up

Jamie Morgan - Football Coordinator

The final matchday for the AIC Football season concluded in spectacular fashion, with a massive home round v St Patrick's College. Seeing our entire program all at one venue was a sight to behold! From our 5 White to 9E to our 6ths Football, what a fantastic season of Football.

On the day, we were very successful right across the program winning 21 matches, drawing 5 and losing 5. With the aggregate still very possible, this was a fantastic day for the College and each student should be commended for their efforts throughout the season. Special praise must go to the following teams and age groups for winning their respective premiership:

7A & 7B who won their outright aggregate double!

8Bs who won an outright premiership

9As who were runners up

1st XI (outright) & 2nd XI (shared) who also won the aggregate double

As mentioned, an exciting day of Football was capped off with a resounding win to the 1st XI who beat the visitors 4-1 - which coupled with an upset victory to Padua over Villanova College elsewhere - meant the 1st XI Football Premiership returns to Ashgrove for the third year in a row!!! Well done to Sam Keogan and the Year 12s of the 1st XI in finishing their senior year as AIC Football Champions.

In other exciting news, I am happy to announce that the AIC Football Aggregate will also return to Marist College in 2021!!! Going into round seven, we were sitting in second place, four points off the lead behind Iona College who played St Peter’s Lutheran College in third. A strong performance on the final day saw us take the lead and secure the aggregate trophy. The trophy returns to Ashgrove after four years, with the College securing the aggregate for the first time since 2017. A massive congratulations to all of the teams for contributing to this overall success!!

As the season wraps up, I would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of key people for the success of the program this year. Thanks to Mr Luke Caplick and the Sports Department for their tireless effort in ensuring the maximum opportunities for students to be involved in playing football. Thanks to Mr Lambourne (Head of Junior Sport) and the Football Age Coordinators, Mr Matt Jones (Year 5), Mr Zach Woodward (Year 6), Mr Terry Quain (Year 7), Mr Paul Knight (Year 8), Mr Marcus Schrader (Year 9), Mr Michael McLaughlin (Year 10) and Mr Andrew King (Opens) for their organisation of their respective age groups. Thanks to the team of officials who often juggled their own games or coaching commitments to officiate matches. Thanks to the numerous coaches of the teams, who are made up of teachers and the many Old Boys for contributing their expertise and passion for Marist Football. Finally, thanks to the boys and families of the football program who wore the Blue and Gold with pride across the various venue across the season.
