Ms Majella Stevens

Tournament of Minds (TOM) offers teams of primary (Years 5-6) and secondary students (Years7-10) the opportunity to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that foster creative, divergent thinking whilst developing collaborative enterprise, excellence and teamwork.

Teams of seven take on the challenge in one of the following four disciplines:

  1. The Arts - students use their talents in the areas of Visual Art, Music and Dance to enhance their solutions to the challenge. Singing and dancing generally feature in this challenge.
  2. Language and Literature - this discipline has a focus on story tellers, poets, well-known books and clever use of language.
  3. Social Sciences - this discipline covers a variety of areas, but there is generally a strong focus on community - groups, civilisations, ethical issues or celebrations are just some possible areas of focus.
  4. STEM - design a machine to perform a given task and then build it with the limited resources available.

All of the disciplines require the students to put together a 10-minute performance that explains the problem and their team’s solution, and which meets a number of other criteria as set out in the challenge. All props and costumes must be created by the team members.

Problem-solving, teamwork, time management, creative and critical thinking are skills that we all need to develop and all are elements of Tournament of Minds. So, register now for the 2021 season. The one thing students say about Tournament is that it is FUN!!

Registrations are now open for Tournament of Minds 2021. Students can access the page on the Learning Portal, enrol in the program AND nominate their preferred discipline.
