Education Perfect Languages Championships - Top Scorers

At our Term 2 College Assembly last week, the top scorers in this year’s Education Perfect Languages Championships (ELPC) were presented with their certificates and trophies, in celebration of their dedicated participation and high achievement in this year’s competition.

Our two Languages Leaders, Holly Sutherland and Kara Miwa-Dale, acknowledged the efforts of all 344 Language students who participated over the seven days of competition, from 16 to 23 March this year. Our College performed well overall by attaining 1st place in Victoria for the 251- 500 students category and 41st overall globally out of 1894 schools!

This year, we had one student who achieved an Emerald Award for earning 5000+ points. Congratulations to Hannah Kotow. We had four students who surpassed 10,000 points to achieve Elite Awards. The following students were congratulated for their efforts and presented with their certificate and trophy by our Principal, Nicole Mangelsdorf:

3rd Place - Emily Smith (10,085 points)

Equal 2nd Place -  Yuhan Huang and Sophie Bloomer (both with 11,111 points)

1st Place - Sarah Bloomer. Our top student and our College champion for the second year in a row! Sarah achieved 12,006 points over the seven days.

The top scoring class at Kilbreda in the EPLC was the Year 10 Japanese class. These hardworking students were rewarded by the two Language Leaders Kara and Holly in class last week, when they presented them with their prizes.

The certificates and medals for the students who achieved Gold, Silver, Bronze as well as the Credit certificates will be distributed to the remainder of recipients in their Languages' classes over the coming week.

Congratulations to all of our Language students on their achievements, and we wish them well in their Language studies!

Languages Week

Languages Week is coming up in Week 7 (31 May to 4 June), so we wanted to give you a snapshot of the exciting things we have planned! Throughout the week, we will be running a variety of different activities and incursions, both during Language classes and at lunchtimes.

Lunchtime

Monday 31 May - the anime, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’, will be shown in the Meeting Room for those wanting to escape the cold, and enjoy some entertainment.

Tuesday 1 June - the Language Leaders will be holding a Kahoot! Competition, with prizes for the winners. More information will be available on SIMON closer to the event.

Mr Smith will be giving a demonstration of the French game ‘boules’ (similar to lawn balls and bocce) on Tuesday on the oval.

Also on Tuesday, there will be a gelati van selling lots of delicious treats at the edge of the carpark!

Incursions

Monday 31 May - the Year 10 and Year 11 Japanese classes will be learning the ancient artform of Calligraphy through a workshop run by an instructor from Ebisu Design. We look forward to seeing their wonderful creations!

Thursday 3 June - the Year 9 and Year 12 Japanese classes will be treated to a Rakugo (traditional Japanese comedy) performance from Showko, who performed in Australia’s Got Talent in 2016. https://showkocomedy.com/

The Year 7 and 8 Japanese classes will decorate a folding fan in a class to celebrate Languages Week.

Also on Thursday, for the Italian classes, the Year 10 students will be making a Sicilian treat called ‘Arancini’ with a guest presenter. Once these are cooked, they will be enjoying them for lunch.

The Year 9 class is going to have a sampling demonstration where they will be introduced to a variety of Italian foods called ‘Salumi’. The presenter will teach them about the origin of the different foods before letting them do a taste test.

The French and Italian classes at Year 7 and 8 will be doing cultural activities in their Languages' classes to celebrate Languages Week.

We are excited to see everyone getting involved in our celebration of all things Japanese, Italian and French.

NB: Due to remote learning, most of these activities will now be rescheduled

My name is Stephanie Waters and I am the Language assistant for Japanese. I have been coming in to the College once a week to help out Ms Yamanaka and Mr Sakurai during class.

I am a Kilbreda graduate of the Class of 2017 and it is such a great experience for me to now, teach alongside those who taught me. I am so excited to meet everyone and hopefully get you all inspired about continuing your own Japanese studies well into the future!

I am currently in my 4th year of my Bachelor of Commerce and Diploma in Languages (Japanese Studies) at the University of Melbourne. My aim is to provide students with advice, not only on the Japanese language, but also to give some 'big sister' advice when it comes to transitioning to university life. It can be quite daunting, but I welcome any questions related to concerns that anyone may have about this topic.

I would like to share a memory of the Japan trip I went on as a student. While we were at Karaoke, I had to ask the Japanese receptionist to guide me to the restroom. At the time, even though I had enough skill to formulate the question, when the receptionist replied I could barely understand what they had said. Thankfully, they had gestured where they were and I did get there in the end. It seems silly but it was situations like this that motivated me to try harder with my studies!

I would recommend everyone to use Japanese both in and outside classroom when the opportunity arises, so that you can continue improving your communication skills in the language.

よろしくおねがいします
