Live Love Learn

Dear Families,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support, patience and understanding during these past couple of weeks of remote learning. Remote Learning has been a government directive that schools have been required to follow.

We are thrilled to announce that following advice from the Chief Health Officer, the Victorian Government and Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools (MACS), all staff and students will be returning to onsite learning at Galilee on Friday 11th June.

Please note that the School Closure Day for Tuesday June 15 has been re-scheduled to Monday July 12 (first day of Term Three).

Many in our community have had vastly different experiences. For some, it has been an opportunity to spend time as a family while others have struggled combining parenting/teaching and working. Within set guidelines, Galilee has endeavoured to support families through onsite supervision (all permitted workers not working from home and vulnerable children) and Remote Learning.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated staff at Galilee who worked around the clock to make sure the Remote Learning Program and onsite supervision that we offered our students allowed them to remain as connected as possible to their peers and learning.

Returning School Devices

If you borrowed a device from the school, students will need to return them with the charger to the office Friday morning.

Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Pick-Up Procedures remain unchanged

Morning Drop-Off Procedures - Students can enter the school grounds via the Bank Street Gate between 8.35am - 8.50am. Students will need to say goodbye at the gate and walk themselves to their classroom (Please note Open Morning has been cancelled on Friday 11th June).

Afternoon Pickup Procedures

Parents/Caregivers will access the school grounds from 3.15pm via the double gates on Bank St. They will walk in a clockwise direction around the students, collecting their child/ren as they pass them. Families will continue walking in a clockwise direction until they exit the school grounds via the pedestrian gate on Bank St. Adults are encouraged to maintain a 1.5m distance from others during our Afternoon Pick-Up.

Necessary Precautions

  • To support and care for the health and wellbeing of all students and staff, the school will continue our enhanced cleaning routine.
  • We ask that you talk to your children about the importance of good personal hygiene, frequent handwashing, as well as coughing into elbows and social distancing where possible.
  • If your child is ill, feeling unwell or has a fever, they must not attend school. They must remain home and seek medical advice if necessary.
  • If your child presents with a fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties, they must not attend school. They must remain home and seek medical advice if necessary.

Student Reports and Student Led Conferences

Galilee's Student Reports will be available on Thursday 24th June via the Parent Portal.

Galilee's Student Led Conference will take place during the second week of Term 3, on Monday 19th July 2-7pm and Wednesday 21st July 2-5pm. Communication regarding signing up for a meeting time with your child/ren's Classroom Teacher will be emailed to all families next week.

Galilee’s Student Reports are in line with the reporting  standards of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Your child’s report will be made accessible electronically, via a Parent Portal, for you to read and discuss with your child.

You will notice that the structure and style of the Reports has returned to a pre-COVID format with a greater emphasis on providing detailed checklists indicating student achievement across the Victorian Curriculum and Religious Education Framework.

All Victorian schools are mandated to fully implement The Victorian Curriculum and the Religious Education Framework with the following expectations:

∙ The standard curriculum frameworks approved for use by Victorian Catholic schools are the Victorian Curriculum F–10,  the Religious Education Framework and the EAL (English as an Additional Language) Developmental Continuum P–10.

∙ Where achievement is displayed graphically, it must be accompanied by a scale.

∙ Judgements must be displayed in a way that convey progress since the last time the standard(s) were reported against  in the school.

∙ The scale must be an age-level-expected scale.

∙ Achievement must be displayed using a five-point scale and will show growth since the last Report.

Your child’s achievement against the Victorian Curriculum and the Religious Education Framework for the semester is rated  against a five point descriptor scale, displayed by a Dot, which identifies whether your child is:

Well above the standard: Well above the standard expected at this time of year

Above the standard: Above the standard expected at this time of year

At the standard: At the standard expected at this time of year

Below the standard: Below the standard expected at this time of year

Well below standard: Well below the standard expected at this time of year

Not all dimensions of a Learning Area are reported on each semester. If a child is showing the same result as the end of  Semester Two 2020, this does not mean that progress has not occurred. Progress is not always even and each child has  his/her own rate of learning. Each increment represents six month’s growth and your child may still be progressing but  consolidating what has been learnt previously, (your child may have shown five month’s growth but not moved up an  increment).

The Student Report format will contain a personalised General Comment about the student’s personal and interpersonal  skills, thinking skills, organisational skills as well as Behaviour and Effort for all Learning Areas.

In the Student Report, the Achievement Standards, from the curriculum, are presented in a table. Each student will be marked  on the Achievement Standards, from the curriculum against a five-point scale. The table will indicate the student's level of  mastery of each Achievement Standard with a tick against the scale heading that best represents their level of achievement.

The Report will provide you with an overview of your child’s achievements and assist in strengthening our family-school  partnership. The Report is intended to promote discussion about how we can work together to benefit your child. If you have  any questions, please discuss them at the upcoming Student-Led Conferences that will occur in the second week of Term 3. An Operoo note will be sent home with access to the Report, providing you with an opportunity to communicate questions you would like to discuss at the conferences.

Wellbeing

By being prepared to be kind and offer help to others, you will add real meaning to your life and grow your wellbeing. The glue which holds our community together so that individuals can thrive and flourish are kindness and forgiveness. There are many wonderful charities, made up of people who are willing to put the wellbeing of others before their own. It's funny how doing this actually makes them shine even brighter themselves.

Book Club Orders

Please place your orders tonight via the Loop Ap. Issue 4 orders will close tomorrow, Friday 11th June.

Year 6 Deforestation Persuasive Openers

It is beyond doubt that we must stop deforestation! Why are we doing this horrendous thing? It is killing our poor, helpless and terrified animals. It is stealing the very air that we breathe every day. And yet we continue! Our planet will simply not survive. WE NEED TO ACT NOW! Because if we don’t the world we live in will become a metropolitan sphere of pollution and destruction.

By Isaac G

The forest is dying! And we MUST put a stop to this horrendous act. Air is the foundation of our body and without it, our blood won't have enough oxygen to deliver to our arms and legs. Adding on, without air our lungs will clog with dust and we’ll have trouble breathing. Sooner or later we will need our forest to live even if it's a single seed that makes a whole forest.

By Johnny H

It is crucial that we stop this disappointing and outrageous problem on Earth, deforestation. Adding to this astronomical issue, it is killing our air, which impacts us humans and animals tremendously. We have to stop this monstrosity of a mess before the world dies down.

By Laura & Scarlett

We HAVE to stop deforestation! It is devastating the animal population and habitats! It's polluting and intoxifying the air by taking away nature's precious filters. Our wonderful Earth is dying and we MUST ACT NOW!

By Aiden C

It is a necessity to protect our abused earth from deforestation. It takes our poor, harmed and overwhelmed animal’s lives and additionally steals our precious air away from us. Our planet is completely dying, in fact, we certainly must act now!

By Alex W

We must stop the outrage of deforestation! The number of trees that are being chopped down is slaughtering our precious, harmless, and endangered animals. It is stealing our limited breaths. Our earth will devastatingly not be able to survive. We demand everyone to act now!

By Izzy B

Our World will be inhabitable if WE don’t act now! From where I stand, our Earth will be in ruin and our oxygen supply will go down and our plastics will go up rapidly. Our Earth that we use as our host is futile if we don’t do anything. Our animals that are a necessity will become extinct and they’ll become hopeless, helpless and harmed if we don’t pull up our socks.

By Wyatt M

Without a doubt, it is essential that we must stop deforestation! We are giving our poor, helpless, defenceless animals no place to call home. Deforestation is reducing the amount of air we breathe every day. If we don’t act now it is certain that our planet won't survive!

By Eliza and Poppy

It is absolutely and utterly essential that we stop deforestation! Deforestation is killing our poor, innocent, defenceless animals which are tremendously devastating! This abysmal problem is stealing our precious air, it must be put to a stop! Our planet will simply not make it if we keep it up like we are. It is vital that we must act now! If we don’t, there won't be any planet left to save. All in all, we must save our trees!
