Our Learning

As the class teachers have already mentioned in their welcome emails, our first project is all about sustainability and integrates the subjects: Science, Design Technologies and English. The students will have lots of opportunities to think about where our rubbish ends up and what we can do to create less waste.
Classes 2/3 and 3/4 have already visited the Recycling Discovery Hub in Hume, to help them understand what happens to all of our waste.
Here's what the children had to say about thier learning:
Muhammad Imran: I felt bad about how much people waste. They use clay to cover all the rubbish so that gasses called methane don't get out. They use the methane to make electricity. They also plant grass on top of the rubbish and it looks like a hill or a mountain. Alluminium takes 500 years to break down and plastic never breaks down.
Manha Irfan: I was very surprised because I didn't know that we produced that much rubbish. I wanted everyone to stop making so much. I also learned that 50 years ago they made a rule that the height of land fill could only be 60 metres high and that when it was that high they made another pile behind it. I learnt that there is a place where you can go to take all of the things that you don't want any more so other people can use them.
Fatimah Zahid: I learned that there is a machine that gathers all the rubbish and makes it into cubes. The cubes are made out of paper which can be recycled. They also squash mild cartons. There is also a machine that takes 10 pictures in one second to sort the rubbish into groups. People also sort the rubbish and if there are bags that are tied up, even if there is good stuff inside it still has to get thrown out. There is a yellow bin filled with batteries and electronics that can't be thrown away. The bin is made out of metal.
In year 1/2 the children are beginning to think about all kinds of things to do with rubbish.
Here are some photos from Year 4's last project of Term 2. In this Physical Sciecne project they learned about how forces are used to make pinball machines.
In years 5 and 6 the students finished off last term with a great display of inventions that included electrical circuits to create light or movement.
