LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library...

Welcome back to Term 3, I hope you’ve had an enjoyable break. Aside from being the busiest time of the year in the library, Term 3 is also the most exciting. This term is all about the Book Fair (weeks 2 & 3) and the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards culminating in Book Week from the 21-27 August 2021 (week 7).

The annual CBCA Book of the Year Awards aims to:

  • promote quality literature for young Australians;
  • support and encourage a wide range of Australian writers and illustrators of children’s books and;
  • celebrate contributions to Australian children’s literature.

There are six categories in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards and information about the shortlisted books in each category can be found at the CBCA website here.

  • CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Younger Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood
  • CBCA Picture Book of the Year
  • Eve Pownall Award (non-fiction)
  • CBCA Award for New Illustrator

2021 Book Week Theme - Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds

This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’ and in this week’s classes we’ll be brainstorming all the incredible places and worlds that stories take us to. This week we’ll be starting to read books in the Early Childhood and Picture Book categories and in week 7 classes will then be voting for their favourite book in a category to see if we agree with the judges who announce the winners that week.

Check out the incredible Shaun Tan poster for this year’s theme - what worlds can you see?

Book Fair

Once again, our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the library during weeks 2 and 3. Large display cases with a huge range of books will be delivered next week and students will have an opportunity to purchase books, posters and other items. This week a letter explaining the book fair and a catalogue will go home with your child. By purchasing from the fair, apart from taking home great stories for your family, the school earns a credit with Scholastic which we use to purchase more books for the library.

With recent changes in Covid rules, unfortunately, families will be unable to attend the Fair so students will need to bring money to school to purchase books. Students will be able to use their library lesson time to buy and also during snack breaks. Once the Fair is set up, I will take photographs of each case and put them on the school’s Facebook page and library Instagram page so that you can see what’s available.

Book Week Dress Up Parade - Week 7

I think I’ve had students asking me about it since the start of the last term, but YES, this year is the Book Week dress-up parade. This is your child’s chance to dress up as their favourite book character or go as part of a group (eg: Thing 1 and Thing 2). While it is very exciting for students, I can appreciate the amount of work it can be to find a costume for your child (especially at the last minute like I used to do!) so please know those simple ideas can often be the best. If you are able to access the internet, there are many quick, inexpensive and fun ideas for your child’s costume, however, if you need any help please let me know and I am happy to help with some ideas.

As the term progresses, more information about the parade and whether families can attend will be given. Stay tuned!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The PRC is in its final months so it’s time to log books you’ve read and when you reach your goal, return the Reading Log. Please come and see me if you need help borrowing more PRC books, there is still time to get there! The closing date is Friday, 21 August 2021.

Welcome back and happy reading!
