LITERACY

Reading & Writing

What we expect the students to learn in Reading:

Students will:

  • Read a variety of mentor texts and identify and analyse the craft techniques and language used by authors
  • Talk critically about an author’s use of text structures and language features used to enhance the text
  • Express changes in ideas and opinions after reading a text and discuss why and how your thinking has changed

What we expect the students to learn in Writing:

Students will be able to:

  • Organise texts using appropriate text structure and features and discuss why these features were chosen and their purpose
  • Experiment with vocabulary, incorporating vocabulary specific to the topic and mode
  • Identify and name a range of writing craft used in mentor texts and apply them to their own writing

Spelling Program:

Term Three sees the continuation of our Spelling Program. Students have been using their Writer’s Notebooks to look for misspelt words. They then use different strategies to spell them correctly (such as thinking of a known spelling pattern, using a dictionary, looking at the word wall or using their reading books or books in the library or the anchor charts in the classroom). Students then write a few words down during the week and practise them on a nightly basis, using the Look, Say, Name, Cover, Write and Check checklist. At the end of the week students test themselves on these words. Once this process is completed students are expected to spell these words correctly when writing in the future.
