Student Leadership

Student Leadership Conference

The Student Leadership Conference (SLC) was held during the January holidays. It was different this year, as it was online, as opposed to being held at Bond University in Queensland.

The conference was organised by the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia, in which

students from girls’ schools across New Zealand and Australia attended as well as

many from one school in Zimbabwe.

From MGSC, College Captains Nisha Makam and Lily West attended as well as SRC Captain Mia Evans, along with Student Voice and Advocacy Captain Samantha Martin and STEAM Captain Rhini Geetha Ashok Balaji.

The overall theme for the conference was ‘Kaleidoscope: shine bright, lead vividly.’ Each day had its own theme, the first being know what you stand for in which there was guest speaker Meggie Palmer - a journalist who speaks and writes about gender and diversity globally as the founder of PepTalkHer.

The students were also split into ‘families’ and ‘tribes’ of smaller groups with girls

around the continent to get to know and complete activities with each other.

The second day’s theme was build your mental toughness in which Rachel Simmons, an American author, spoke about becoming tough and effective leaders. Nick Harding also spoke about communicating a leaders’ vision.

Day 3 brought the theme of leaving a legacy in which Niall Williams, New Zealand Rugby Sevens player, spoke about overcoming setbacks. Students were also able to work with leaders from their own school to outline the year ahead as leaders of their school.

Ultimately, the conference was extremely beneficial and each leader took so much out of the three days in which they learned how to communicate as a better leader and set 2021 up for success.

We each look forward to the year ahead and are grateful for the opportunity to attend

the SLC conference, despite not being able to attend in person.
