Welcome to Middle School 2019

A warm welcome to all parents of our Middle School students. Your child has settled well into their classroom routines and we are very busy with planning many exciting learning experiences for them.  Please have a read of the curriculum focus in each key learning area and do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions about the term ahead.

Literacy

In Literacy this term, our focus in Writing will be to continue to develop the students’ skills in narrative and persuasive writing. We will use the Writer’s Notebook to build the students’ repertoire of finding ideas and inspiration for writing through ‘seeds’, both as a class and individually. Students are encouraged to find photographs, pictures and prompts at home and bring them to school to add to their ‘seeds’ collection.

 

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, the students will be focussing on improving their skills in place value, addition and subtraction. They will participate in numeracy activities and fluency games to strengthen their problem solving skills. Students will also learn applied mathematics skills in the area of shapes.  

You can help your child in numeracy by including him/her in simple daily mathematics tasks around the house such as telling the time, measuring ingredients when cooking and using money when shopping. These are all great ways to get your child excited about mathematics and making it fun.

Inquiry Learning

This term students will be investigating the history of the Australian community and identify  causes and reasons for the journey on the First Fleet. We will also investigate the impact this had on the local inhabitants.

Home Learning

Across all grades, there is an expectation that students will complete their homework tasks, which are given fortnightly. Homework consists of a range of tasks covering Reading, Math, Spelling and Inquiry. We would be most appreciative if parents encouraged their children to spend time each evening to complete the tasks in the given time.
