MUSIC

Congratulations and thank you to the Senior Choir for participating in the 2018 Oxfam School’s Music Festival last year at Box Hill Town Hall. OXFAM is reporting that this year was the biggest Oxfam School Music Festival ever!

Our singing at the festival helped raise $20,000 for life changing Oxfam projects including a farming project in Timor-Leste, an emergency appeal for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and a program to engage Indigenous women from across Australia in conversations with politicians in Canberra.

Thanks to all our choir families for enabling the participation of the children, and for being our very supportive and adoring audience. Our music making has made a positive difference in the everyday lives of real people faced with great challenges. As we sang in the Ed Sheeran song, I'll be sitting here with a song that I wrote, sing, love can change the world, but what do I know.

What's not to like about that! Well done everyone!

MATHLETES OF THE LAST 2018 FORTNIGHT

Please notethat if you applied for CSEF last year you do not need to reapply this year.

Eligibility

On the first day of term one (29 January 2019) or the first day of term two (23 April 2019), a parent or legal guardian of a student must:

  • be an eligible beneficiary of one of these cards:
  • Veterans Affairs Gold Card

  • OR they must be a temporary foster parent
  • OR the student is 16 years or older and holds a valid concession card (such as a Youth Allowance Health Care Card)
  • AND the parent or legal guardian must submit an application by the due date.

Parents who receive a carer allowance on behalf of a child, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF unless they also comply with the above.

Eligibility will be determined when the parent’s concession card successfully validates with Centrelink on either the first day of term one or term two.

If the eligible card is in the name of the student, the fund is only granted to that student, not their siblings.

HELPERS NEEDED FOR 2019                BIG ON BOOKS

Big-on-Books is a school based literacy support program for students in Grades 3 – 6 who would   benefit from additional support with literacy activities. In this program, volunteer tutors work with a     student once a week for half an hour session, supporting them with their reading.  A key factor in the Big-on-Books program is reliable volunteer tutors from the community.  You  yourself may be interested in participating in this program as a volunteer tutor, or you may know someone in the wider community (such as a retiree) who is interested in participating in this program.

It is most important that these students see their tutors every week, so before signing on, please be very sure that you are prepared to commit fully to the program and can  come every week.

We are hoping to get the Big-on-Books program operating early in Term 2.  We will run a short training session for those who would like to become tutors, on a date to be advised. If you have already trained previously, you do not need to train again, though you are more than  welcome to attend the session.

You must have a current ‘Working with Children’ card. If you do not have one, you need to apply at the Post Office as soon as possible and state that you are a volunteer (this will then be free of charge).

If you are interested in participating in this program, please email the following information as soon as possible to:- Fiona Davis  -  davis.fiona.f@edumail.vic.gov.au or Sheridan Pover - pover.sheridan.m@edumail.vic.gov.au
