What is Trauma?
“Trauma is an emotional wound resulting from a shocking event or multiple and repeated life threatening and/or extremely frightening experiences that may cause lasting negative effects on a person, disrupting the path of healthy physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual development.”
Children traumatic experiences can develop from exposure to one or more traumatic events, that may include, community violence, domestic violence, early childhood trauma, medical trauma, natural disasters, neglect, physical abuse, school violence, sexual abuse, traumatic grief etc.
Trauma Informed Care:
Students that have experienced trauma are able to better heal when adults provide them with the following: a safe environment, access to forming/developing relationships and connectedness, as well as, on-going support and teaching of emotional regulation. Together adults can ensure that all children heal by providing them with safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment.
The KEY is to promote Empowerment, Resilience and Strengths Perspective in order for children to overcome adversity.
