Past Pupils

Let Them Know We Care
Kilbreda Past Pupils and members of the Kilbreda Community, I am inviting you to assist in a major letter writing campaign to our MP’s expressing concern at the Federal Government's decision to evict people seeking asylum from community detention and the removal of any income support.
The Justice Action Group of St Mary of the Cross, Mordialloc and Aspendale, of which I am a member, has collaborated with the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP) to provide the following information, which will assist those wishing to participate in the letter writing campaign:
• ARAN/@HomeSafeWithUs Media Statement 6 September 2020 'Hundreds more refugees being abandoned to homelessness'
• Information Flyer/Invitation to participate and MP list (attached)
Sr Brigid Arthur from BASP has also recorded a short video message which provides the background and a call to action to participate.
We are aiming to achieve 10,000 letters. Could you also please forward this information to participate and the information material to your contacts who may be willing to get involved.
As we want to keep a tally of the number of letters and to whom they have been sent, could you please advise me denise127@optusnet.com.au and let me know.
Thank you for your support in caring for those who have no voice.

Kilbreda Past Pupils of Distinction is an initiative that recognises, acknowledges and celebrates outstanding achievements and contributions to community that the nominees have made/are making, and that in embodying the College motto, Strength and Kindliness, have made and are making a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
Inductees are chosen by a selection committee comprised of the Kilbreda Stewardship Council and chosen in accordance with the set criteria.
2021 Nominations Now Open!
We are encouraged by the ongoing interest and support created by Past Pupils of Distinction. Nominations close on 14 May 2021 at 3.00pm.

The 2021 Kilbreda Past Pupils of Distinction inductees and nominees will be celebrated at a formal dinner to be held on Friday 6 August 2021 at the College.

Past Pupils News
It happens to be thirty years since the good old afternoon Herald merged with the Sun to become the Herald-Sun. Interestingly, as a paperboy at the Tudor Inn Hotel in Cheltenham for many years, I was awarded Herald Sun Newsboy of the year in 1980. How prestigious!
As a result of the celebrations, the paper is running a series of special features to mark the occasion, and, on the weekend, they listed the 30 Most Influential Victorians. While one was a past pupil of Mentone Grammar, Shane Warne, another was our very own former Chief-Justice of the Supreme Court and 2017 Past Pupil of Distinction, Marilyn Warren AC.
The article referred to her starting out in a male-dominated “sea of men in grey suits” in the 70s and the momentous scene many years later of Marilyn sitting with two female justices, with women counsel before them, in 2015. A couple of current Year 12 students were lucky enough to meet her last year when they accompanied me to Parliament House to hear her deliver the Deakin Oration.
Appointed in 2003, she was responsible for ending the wearing of wigs and introducing technological innovations to the courts. Known for riding a bike to work rather than using the Supreme Court’s chauffeur service, she is a true role model for the modern Kilbreda girl.
During the week, the Herald-Sun also contained death notices for a couple of other past pupils from days gone by. One was Marie Faraone (née O’Rourke) from the class of 1957, tennis captain and prefect and classmate of Brigidine sisters, Deidre Malone, Delys Baldwin and Maree Holt.
The other had Brigidine connections too. Margaret O’Halloran (née Myers) was the sister of Mary Myers csb and the niece of former Principal, Mother Margaret Mary Murphy. Her mother Kathleen was a past pupil and along with her husband Ted, they were committed and generous benefactors to the College for nearly twenty years. They donated a College flag, which was proudly hoisted on the back oval by Margaret and her sister Linda, in March 1934. The sisters were also listed as contributors of a pound each to the ‘Tennis Court Contribution’ on February 12 1934, and their ‘dismay became delight’ 1 when the breaking up of the old Coffee Palace tennis court in November 1933, made way for a ‘new and up-to-date’ 2 concrete court, which was ready for the 1934 school year.
Margaret and Linda are pictured in photos from 1931, with Margaret finishing her time here in 1940. Margaret enjoyed all aspects of Kilbreda life and threw herself into sporting competitions, being awarded Mr Slaweski’s medal in November 1934, and ‘for exceptional effort for the honour of her house (Lisieux), by diligence in class work and 100 percent satisfaction in physical and recreative exercises the cup presented by Mr. M. McGrath was awarded to Miss Margaret Myers.’ 3
