Year 10 LEAP

Our Year 10 LEAP class was MAGNIFICENT last Friday at their 'Shark Tank' presentation at Swinburne’s KIOSC.

The Year 10 Applied Learning class (we call them our LEAPsters but really, they are LEAP stars!) have been working all year on a project that they  have tackled through four different industries, thus gaining insight into the four different TAFE courses – Engineering, Electrical, Horticulture and Marketing. They created a terrarium type plant holder with an automatic water sensor and alarm. They 3D printed their design, wired it up, planted it and then marketed it. They called them GEOPODS.

The Shark Tank presentation was done in front of Mr Sam Cosentino, our VCAL and LEAP Coordinator Caitlin Mackay and the KIOSC staff and Program Coordinators. Here they had to 'pitch' their idea and design with the help of social media through Instagram, Facebook and a Video. They really rose to the occasion and exceeded the expectations of both Swinburne and Nazareth staff. Students were able to answer questions at the end of their pitch outlining that they genuinely knew their product inside and out. Mr Cosentino reflected to the staff that it was truly the highlight of his week.

They could not have done this without the help from Mrs Naomi Pernar and Ms Emily Bryon, two of our fabulous Learning Support Officers, who worked with the students every week. A special mention must also go to Mr Paull Zeigler for transporting us all to KIOSC each week in the College bus so we didn’t have to rely on public transport during this tricky year.

The students were WONDERFUL ambassadors for this pilot program that was created between Nazareth and KIOSC and marked the start of a great new partnership with Swinburne.

Congratulations to our 2020 LEAPsters: Sav B, Jorden B, Mari B, Sas D, Stefan G, Anthony L, Joshua M, Cristian M, Jai M, Josh P and Jason P.

I look forward to building on this program next year with our 2021 LEAPsters.

Year 10 Work Experience 2021

Next Monday during Fast Start, the 2021 Year 10 students will be introduced to the Work Experience program for next year. Whilst the dates for Work Experience are not until 21- 25 June 2021, it is important to get a head start as these are the dates for most local schools. This is what fits best around the school semesters, exams etc. It is common for popular places to get booked up early so we want to make sure our students get the best opportunities possible.

I urge you to encourage your child to seek out a worthwhile placement during the school holidays. They will be given the legal paperwork to be signed at Mondays session. Please note that many hospitals are accepting students now for next years dates. Veterinarians and lawyers are among the most sought out places and get snapped up quickly. The police force is highly popular and unlikely to be taking people for next year at this stage.

Work Experience is a wonderful opportunity to get an inside look at an industry you may be considering as a career but  students who leave organizing a placement until the last minute generally end up going to supermarkets or chain stores. Whilst there is nothing wrong with working at KMART, it is not making the best use of the opportunity as students can always gain work there as a part  time job whilst still at school.

I urge all students to take this opportunity seriously and start asking family friends, extended family, coaches, tutors and other available networks. It is always considered as the best week in Year 10. Make it count !!

Year 12 Results and Change of Preferences (COP)

A reminder that results – VCAL, VCE study scores and the ATAR will come out at 7am on 30th December. Students will then have the opportunity to change their preferences until 4th January. Universities and TAFE’s will have help lines, virtual tours and selection officers available during some of this time – a list of numbers, times and dates will be sent via an email to all year 12 students and is attached to this newsletter:

Please note I will be available via zoom, email and phone during this period for assistance.

Prior to this, Universities, TAFE’s and other Private Providers will have sessions available for students to seek out and learn about different courses and places (like mini Open days) These are very worthwhile and assist greatly in being able to choose the right course in the right place. This will be held from 8 to 18 December 2020. It is advised to google the institution you are hoping to go to as there are too many sessions and activities to list.

A reminder that students need to register to receive their results which can be done through the VTAC website - vtac.edu.au

For questions about their results, they can contact resultsandatar.vic.edu.au

Year 12 Offers

First round offers will be made to students on Thursday 14 January 2021. There will be several rounds after this time but generally 80% of offers are made during the first round.

I will also be available via phone, email, zoom and at school at this time.

Good Luck to all and enjoy the holiday period.
