Science

I would like to thank the Science faculty for persevering during such an extraordinary year. Your efforts are much appreciated.

As always, the Science faculty cannot run smoothly without the efforts of our lovely lab technicians - Ms Michelle Nogueira and Ms Amanda Gluyas

We welcome Ms Heather Murtagh as the new Instructional Leader for Science and STEM and wish her all the very best in her new role.

We say goodbye to lovely Mrs Cara Harding who is leaving Victoria for a tree change to country NSW.

Have a lovely Christmas and New Year and see you all in 2021.

Stage Band

Finally, the Stage Band, led by Mr Cornelius, has found a secure outdoor venue to have their final two rehearsals together for this year.

We commend all of our music students for their tremendous efforts in 2020 and for maintaining their instrumental lessons and ensemble rehearsals over Zoom. We are so proud of you all!

We are looking forward to a brilliant new start in 2021 with lots of new music repertoire and many performances.

We would like to remind all families that instrumental lesson application forms can be found under Simon – Knowledge Banks. Instrumental fees will be included on the school fees account in 2021. Please return your completed form by Monday 30 November.

Year 7 Classroom Music

Our Semester 2 Year 7 Music students are thrilled to be back in the Music classroom in Term 4. After studying note values endlessly during remote learning, they have finally been able to practice and perform their group rhythmic compositions together successfully.

We are very proud of all of our Year 7 Music students and are looking forward to their bright futures in the Performing Arts Department at Nazareth College over the next five years.

Wood Tech

A total of eight bird boxes have been constructed to go to the bushfire affected regions of Victoria. These boxes were made in particular for Eastern Rosellas.

The students who helped make the boxes were Liam (Year 9), Andre, Harrison and Kobi (Year 11 VCAL).

Studio Arts

Remote learning provided a few challenges for the Year 10 Studio Art class; however, students have made impressive progress and produced some beautiful work throughout the semester. The Digital Photography method was used to explore a range of art elements & principles. Collage was another technique explored. Students also studied the works of many renowned artists including Andy Goldsworthy, an installation artist from Great Britain who works with nature, and a range of Still Life artists. Students showed their understanding of the subject, and their artistic talent and skills with their interpretation of the Still Life subject matter using Collage.

On returning to school-based classes, students were eager to produce a painted response for their final assessment task. They were provided with themes and examples of works by artists who worked within these themes. Two students who produced high-quality work are Tam (KN1) and Bright (MC2), both pictured with their stunning pieces.

Tam’s painting is based on the theme of ‘Places’ and influenced by the colours of the Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh and Japanese subject matter. Bright chose the topic of ‘Imagine’, very much influenced by the iconic Spanish artist, Salvador Dali and the Surrealist Movement.

What a wonderfully creative and productive end to an extraordinary year.

School of Excellence

The School of Excellence will have its final sessions tomorrow and brings to an end a difficult year for our students. Since the return to training our students have turned out in high numbers and the morale amongst the students has been very pleasing to see and hear. Chris and Harry have been very impressed by the intensity of the sessions and the quality that is demonstrated on a regular basis.

I wish our students and coaches an enjoyable break and are ready to return next year for the School of Excellence or Year 9 Soccer and Basketball class.

Year 7 English-Sustainability Unit

Our final assessment in Year 7 English focused on the topic of ‘Sustainability.’ The students of the Knowledge classes viewed the documentary Waste Land, giving them tremendous insight into the lives of the catadores (rubbish pickers) who live on the largest dumpsite in the world in Brazil. These pickers fulfilled the role of recycling materials, and under the guidance of Vik Muniz, a famous photographer, they created amazing artworks from the very same recycled materials that they collected.

The students then had to respond to the film with a written reflection and come up with an art piece that highlighted a sustainable issue of their choice. All art pieces were created from recycled materials from around their home.

These artworks were on display in the Resource Centre for two weeks, whereby other students and staff were invited to cast their votes for the best art piece and best summary.

Today, the students who were awarded their environmentally friendly prizes included:

ART PIECE

  1. Zak (MC2) -   A waste filled summer
  2. An Thu (MA3) -   Plastic Fishes
  3. Sanuka (MA4) -   The Number 1 Natural Polluter

SYNOPSIS

  1. Emmanual (MC1) -    Mendacious Food
  2. Sanuka (MA4) -     The Number 1 Natural Polluters
  3. Jayda (MA5) -    the Silent Killer

Congratulations to all students for their creativity and enthusiasm for this assessment.
