Water Polo

Water Polo training started this week in the diving pool at the Orange Aquatic Centre. Training with your friends as the sun rises is a fun and invigorating way to start the day and many students comment about how much they love the early morning sessions. The sport continues to grow in popularity, with close to 130 students choosing to play this season. The local competition has also grown and Thursday evening games will now be played in two pools. It has been a wonderful experience for KWS to have been a part of the local competition from its inception and we are grateful for the support of the local organisers.

Competition matches will start next week and we have high hopes for our teams. We have entered three teams in the Junior division, four in the Intermediate and four in the Opens. I look forward to sharing their adventures with you as the season progresses.

Much of our communication with the players and parents is via the KWS Water Polo group on Team App. I would encourage all players and parents to join the appropriate access group. This enables me to quickly communicate changes of plans such as pool closures or draw changes.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at asuthers@kws.nsw.edu.au should you have any questions related to the Water Polo program at KWS.

The first Saturday of term saw a wonderful day’s play across Orange as the weather held and students were primed to begin a proper season of sport in the ODCA and ODJCA competitions. The 1st XI has now completed two rounds in the BOIDC First Grade and have been highly competitive, pushing their opposition throughout and ably led by 1st XI Captain George Cumming. It is exciting to hear that the Douglas and Wiburd Shield are planning to go ahead this season with draws and details to come soon. Finally, well done to all new KWS Senior school cricketers who played for the club for the first time on Saturday and welcome to the new cricketing parents.

Cricket Reports

1st XI Round 1

The day started with us losing the toss and being sent into bat first. The openers were Mr Ronald and James Glasson and they put on a total of 74 until the first wicket. Mr Ronald got bowled on 47 and Sam Gee was sent in. Sam scored 34 and then Angus Blyde was sent into finish it off with James Glasson. James ended up on 58, getting us a team total of 196 with a loss of only 2 wickets. Our bowling attack started with Charlie Condon and Hugh Thompson who both bowled well leaving CYMS on 0/32 off 8 overs. Then the highlight of the day came when Stu Crisp was bowling. His bowling started with a wicket maiden and then he got a wicket on nearly every over after that, leaving him on 6/22 off 8 overs. Sam Gee then came onto bowl with his spinners and finished it up with 4/24 and leaving him on a hattrick for next week. We bowled CYMS out for 128 runs making us the winners by 68 runs and on top of the table. By Mr Prowse

2nd XI Round 1

On Saturday 17th of October the Scorchers were pumped to have the first game of the season against Orange City. It was a beautiful day with the sun out but very high winds. The City Warriors won the toss and chose to field, sending the Scorchers to the middle. The openers Jamie Anderson and Angus Pengilly gave the team a very good start having a partnership of 70 runs before drinks. With Jamie retiring at 50 and Angus totalling 37. Next in line were Charlie Condon and Charlie Tink. The entertainment continued with Charlie Condon hitting four 6s then retiring at 50 after 29 balls. With three overs left Cale Slack-Smith brought the total to 208 runs with only 4 wickets falling. A fantastic result!

The Scorchers had an early wicket giving the Scorchers lots of confidence. Angus Cornish from OC came in at number three, hitting a well-earned 55 off 58 balls and retiring putting the KWS attack under some pressure. The Scorchers bowling was excellent though getting quick wickets before A Cullen scored 40 off 21 balls hitting 2 sixes and again threatening a boil-over. William Kerr bowled exceptionally with 2/34, with the team bowling out the Warriors for 8/179 with a sigh of relief and leaving the Scorchers with a well-earned win, ready for next week against CYMS Gold. A great start to the season! By Angus Blyde

U13 Sixers Round 1

The Sixers were defeated by CYMS by the narrowest of margins – 2 runs – on Saturday. After being sent in CYMS were restricted to 80 from their 25 overs. There was some good bowling and fielding that kept the pressure on CYMS throughout. In reply, the Sixers lost an early wicket but gradually some little partnerships emerged to get us back in the game. The highlights came from Henry Baldwinson (22) and Fergus Strudwick (17) who played some excellent shots and ran well between the wickets. Unfortunately, we lost wickets at regular intervals – the CYMS spinners were especially effective and we should have been more careful with shot selection – and when the 8th wicket fell the score was on 79 (in a 9-a-side competition). Thanks to all the Sixers parents for their support and help on the day. By Mr Kerridge
