YEAR 9 WHO AM I? SELF-PORTRAITURE

We are thrilled to announce that our talented Year 9 Art students have recently completed the exciting task “Who Am I? Self-Portraiture”.

Throughout the unit, students explored symbolism in the works of various artists, including Frida Kahlo and Christian Thompson, and conducted their own extensive material studies. Following this, students created their own self-portrait, incorporating the techniques they had learned.

We are proud of our students’ dedication and creativity in completing this project and can’t wait to see what they produce next.

Well done, Year 9 Art students!

VCD MELBOURNE NOW

On Thursday 11 May, we had an amazing opportunity to attend the 'Melbourne Now' exhibition at NGV Ian Potter Centre. This major art and design exhibition celebrated the city's vibrant and diverse creative culture by featuring the works of over 300 artists, designers, architects, and other creative practitioners. Some of the featured artists were Christian Thompson, Atong Atem, Mia Boe, Kait James, Layla Vardo, Lisa Reid, and the Pitcha Makin Fellas collective.

The exhibition gathered different sections together, ranging from painting and sculpture to fashion and performance art, with each section showcasing a different aspect of Melbourne's diverse culture. Before visiting the exhibition individually, our enthusiastic guide and teachers highlighted a few pieces of work and gave us new observations of 'what constitutes great design.' These incredible displays helped us explore different types of design pieces and gain a real-world understanding of how design elements and principles can create innovative design.

MEETING THE ARTIST

Our students weren’t the only ones being inspired during the recent Melbourne Now excursion. Ms Rogosic and myself were star-struck when, during the excursion, we realised we were standing next to Vipoo Srivilasa! For anyone who hasn’t studied Year 8 Art recently, Vipoo Srivilasa is one of the Artists studied as part of the Ceramics elective. Vipoo Srivilasa is a Thai-born Australian artist known for his ceramic sculptures that explore themes of identity, migration, and cultural exchange. Our Year 8 students study his artworks and create ceramic creatures in response.

Completely unaware Vipoo Srivilasa was in the room, Ms Rogosic and myself were discussing his work with our students, which is currently on display at the NGV International, with some of our Year 11 students.

We had some great conversations about art, ceramics and the work our Year 8s complete that is inspired by Vipoo work.

What a small world!
