Handwriting – Why it matters

Most adults use computers or digital devices (often mobile phones) on a daily basis, at work and to communicate with others. Digital devices are also common within our schools and are an important tool in the learning process. So, why do we still bother with handwriting?

Research suggests that the physical process of writing a letter helps students learn and remember that letter and it’s sound. Focusing on the feature of the letter and how to form the letter also helps the student recognise the letter more quickly. Recognising and recalling letters and their sounds is a vital part of learning to read and spell.

Computers will continue to be an important tool for our students, but you will also see teachers and support staff using a range of techniques to teach and improve handwriting.
