5/6 BOC Class News -

Miss O'Connor

In 5/6 BOC we have had a strong start to the year with our Numeracy. We have spent the first half of the term immersing ourselves in Number and Place Value, as well as looking at Time. We have been actively finding opportunities for peer collaboration to help us develop our problem solving abilities and ways of communicating our thinking.

One way that we have been doing this is through "maths buddies". This is dedicated time throughout the week to work through challenges with one or two peers. The students have shown that they are able to lean on their peers to cement their knowledge on place value, as well as challenge themselves to solve problems outside of their comfort zone. It is an honour to listen, engage and ask prompting questions while we are doing maths buddies, and the students have shown that they can find the materials they need 'in the moment' and work in a learning space that is flexible to what they need. Here are some comments I have heard students say during maths buddies:

"I didn't realise you could get the answer that way..."

"I think we could try this instead..."

"I'm good at addition but I need to work with someone who is strong at multiplication..."
