How can I engage in reading with my child?

One of the best ways to engage in your child's learning is through showing an interest in reading. Studies show that when a parent reads with  their child and not just to them, a child develops a sense of imagination, curiosity, independence and a love for reading.

Children of all ages reap the benefits when they read with an adult. It can spark conversation, shared experiences and develop emotional intelligence by discussing characters, events, and how one relates to a story. Once a child is able to read on their own, it is imperative that reading remains a non-negotiable when it comes to evening routines.

How can you help a child develop a love for reading? By showing them that you are a reader too. This can be done through showing them that you read articles, newspapers, commentary, comics, anime, fiction and non-fiction books. Discuss with them what you learn from reading and how reading benefits your day to day life. If your child is yet to find a genre that hooks them in explore your local library and choose texts that you can read together!

I would love to hear how you engage in reading with your middle to upper primary school aged child, and would appreciate any text suggestions that I can share in the newsletter to help families engage in reading with their child.

Kind Regards,
