Sustainability at Trinity

Nude Food Day Term 1

Next week on Thursday, March 16 we will be holding our first Nude Food Day for 2023. Nude Food is an initiative where people are encouraged to bring food items free of single-use packaging and Trinity is encouraging all students and staff to get involved. Nude Food promotes healthy food choices, therefore fueling us with the nutrition that our bodies require to learn and inspires us to take responsibility for the ‘stuff’ that we pack within our lunchboxes. By reducing the waste that we create from food packaging and opting for alternative reusable food containers and wraps, we can reduce our environmental impact and establish positive habits for the future. As www.nudefoodmovers.com.aureminds us, the benefits of packing a rubbish free lunch are wide-ranging:

  • Reducing your environmental footprint
  • Teaching children about the need to reduce, re-use and recycle
  • Having fun creating delicious lunches and snacks
  • Looking after your health
  • Promoting rubbish free days in school
  • Providing parents with an easy lunch packing solution.

In celebration of the day there are competitions available for all year levels to participate in. And re-usable prizes are up for grabs. Year 9’s gather litter data

Last week two classes of Year 9 students conducted a litter audit across the grounds of Trinity, not only assisting our environment but helping to gather valuable data about our waste habits at school.

Students were allocated a specific area where they worked in small groups to collect all litter (items not placed within a bin), categorise the materials of each piece of rubbish and provide further information about the area of the school that they investigated.

Two of the major findings of this activity show that:* A total of 963 pieces of rubbish were collected by 30 Year 9 students over a time period of 30 minutes* Of this total, 423 pieces of rubbish were soft plastic, the most common material littered.

Students will analyse the wider data set in PBL classes and continue to learn from such activities whereby we can hopefully reduce our waste habits in the future.
