Winter Sport Training

With the end of the Summer PSA season coming to an end this weekend, preparations for the Winter sporting season begin in Week 9. Whilst I normally would like to give the students a week’s break between seasons, circumstances around the calendar (early Term 1 finish, later Term 2 start), means that training sessions have to be arranged to allow for trials for team selections.

These will be compulsory sessions for all students (unless otherwise stated) to allow the coaches the opportunity to select teams for Round 1.

Head of the River: Trinity College Win Fourth Hamer Cup in a Row and Claim Challenge Cup

Trinity College have continued their recent dominance of the Head of the River regatta, winning their fourth Hamer Cup in a row and claiming the Challenge Cup at Champion Lakes.

Trinity claimed their 15th Hamer Cup to move alongside Aquinas College for the most in regatta history after they scored the most points for placings in each event, while also winning the first eight race to secure the Challenge Cup.

Despite their consistency across all events over the last four instalments of the Public Schools Association’s marquee regatta in recent years, success in the first eight race had eluded them since 2016.

Trinity director of rowing Phil Jurjevich said the double win had wrapped up a perfect day for the school and it meant a lot to equal Aquinas’ record in the process.

“We’re still a bit numb to be honest. It was a brilliant day, this year has been so beautiful, weather-wise, so it just was a surreal day - I’m still spinning out,” he said.

“The 15th Hamer equals Aquinas’ great effort, it was a great battle and none of these races were easy to win, every race was like a slugfest, stroke for stroke.”

All 15 of Trinity’s Hamer Cups have come since 2002, with Scotch College (three wins), Christ Church Grammar (two wins) and Guildford Grammar (one win) the only other schools to hold the cup over that spell.

The boat the first eight prevailed in had been named after Trinity old boy and Tokyo bronze medallist Jack Cleary, and the school’s principal Darren O’Neill said the two trophies were a reward for the effort of the octet throughout the season.

“Nine out of the 12 events, the boys had victories in, so it showed really both the depth and the excellence of the shed,” he said.

“Saturday was a reward for consistency and excellence throughout the whole season, because they’ve been at that level in every regatta.”
