Year 9 Becoming Men - Guest Speakers

Daniel Vos ('20)

As a part of the Becoming Men program, the Year 9 cohort was fortunate to have Daniel Vos ('20) come and speak about his TC journey and the influence mentors had on his journey.

Daniel identified Joel Shinkfield (Class of 2020 Head of Year) as a mentor in his life, who has supported and guided him during his journey so far. Daniel suggested that choosing the right mentor in the right aspects of your life is so important, and the value of trust is invaluable in building a strong relationship with your mentor. On behalf of the Class of 2026, we thank Daniel for taking the time to come back and share his experiences with us!!

Greg Hire

As part of the Becoming Men program, the Year 9 cohort was fortunate to have Greg Hire come and speak about his journey and the influence of mentors.

Greg was a professional basketball player for the Perth Wildcats, winning 4 x NBL championships (with the championship rings being shown off by Year 9 student Kai Collins!) and representing Australia and winning a Silver medal in the 3 x 3 basketball competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Greg identified many mentors in his life, providing great insights in the way that they helped and support his journey from adolescence through to now. He mentioned that we meet many people on our journey that we can learn from, and it is through their influence, and through our own failures, that we can continue to grow and develop. On behalf of the Class of 2026, we thank Greg for taking the time to come back and share his experiences with us!!

Have Sum Fun

Over the last two Fridays Trinity College has been host to over 500 students from 30 different schools for the annual Have Sum Fun Mathematics competitions. The Have Sum Fun Competition is an exciting mathematics initiative that uses a quiz-night format. Teams of six students race against the clock to solve four intense rounds of eight challenging problems.

Friday, 10 March saw 250 Year 11 and 12 students descend for their round of competition. There was a buzz in the air as most students were representing their schools for the final time. Final results were so close that 1st and 2nd place were determined by the tie breaker round in which Rossmoyne SHS Team 1 placed first by 47seconds.

On Friday, 17 March we hosted the Year 9 and 10 competition at the school whilst also sending our Year 7 and 8 teams to Churchlands SHS to compete in their round of competition. It is always such a pleasure to see so many students having fun while doing maths well into the night.

Thank you to all boys who took part, teachers who supervised and ran competitions and to parents for supporting the boys in each of the competitions. We look forward to perhaps doubling our entries for 2024.

PARTY Program Experience

Rhys Davey, Year 10

Upon arrival at Royal Perth Hospital, we received a warm greeting from our host, Kath who is highly experienced in many areas within the medical field and came across as a funny and genuine person. Initially, we received presentations from Nick and Craig who talked about how alcohol, drugs and making poor choices changed their lives forever.

Then we were taken on a tour through the ICU, Emergency Department, and other sections of the Hospital. We met a lot of staff who I felt showed a passion for working at RPH which was demonstrated through their enthusiasm.

Finally, we talked to Konnah who is a paraplegic, and he shared his story of how he made poor choices with alcohol and the people he surrounded himself with. His story made me reflect on how lucky I am, and it changed my perspective on risk taking.

These experiences gave me an emotional insight into the affects of the risks involved in alcohol and drug abuse. I left the presentation with a new perspective on my own actions and the possible consequences that could impact the rest of my life.

Secondary Assistance Scheme

The Secondary Assistance Scheme is available for families in Years 7 to 12. If you hold a Centrelink Health Care Card, Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card or Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, you may be eligible for up to $350 towards school expenses.

Application forms are available from College Reception. Applications must be lodged with the state government by the end of Term 1.
