Last week the Year 11s retreated to the New Town Rowing Centre to spend a day examining “What is Servant Leadership?”. The day was facilitated by Dave Jorna, from Project Hatch who has many years leading such programs. In the first session the boys looked at what is their personal code? Understanding this leads to increased resilience, you can withstand negative social pressure and you act with more purpose and intention. This combines to help you live a fuller life, while making a greater difference for others.
During the second session, they looked at ‘where you focus is where you end up’ which examined the importance of a healthy mindset and surrounding yourself with the right people. This session included a vigorously fought singing battle, which was ultimately declared a tie. The final session of the day focused on the meaning of ‘Deeds not Words’ by reflecting on the special people in our lives who have the ability to bring out our inner confidence, self-belief and self-worth. In other words, those who bring out what God put in. Using examples such as Jesus, Pope Francis and Edmund Rice, they explored the lasting and powerful impact and influence they can have on others around them by acts of service. The students provided feedback on the day, some of the comments included:
“There was a great bond between the boys, and we were able to gain valuable knowledge about being good man with core values.”
“It was enjoyable, impactful, and I genuinely think it was a good experience for everyone.”
“…it was very eye-opening and felt honest.”
The students impressed all of us with their engagement during the day and I thank them for stepping out of their comfort zone to participate in the activities.
It is the second week of Lent. Our students have been learning that Lent is a season of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Many believe that fasting means the giving up of something. Pope Francis described it as something that “leads to some benefit for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends down to his brother in need and takes care of him. Fasting involves choosing a sober lifestyle; a way of life that does not waste, a way of life that does not “throw away”.” Some of our Year 9s have made Lenten promises that might be impacting on your families – many decided to commit to almsgiving - to help around the home by doing extra chores to help their family. I hope some families are seeing this Lenten commitment.
Spirit of the Living God, guide me in your ways and keep me attentive to your word. May my footsteps and actions always follow your renewing Spirit and may your grace be with me. Amen
