Cyber Safety

CyberSafety @  COHR with Inform & Empower

Did you know that many apps, social media and games that have age restrictions on them are there for a very real reason?  Many of these are set for 13+.

We know that many of our students in 3 - 6 are on some of these and even a few of our 1\2's - when they sign up they have to put in a date of birth. Obviously the date of birth being inserted is a made up one?  We just want to alert and remind you that the many algorithms that make up these apps, games etc are set around the age group entered. This means that if your 10 year old child has inserted a 15 year old birthdate then many posts, possible chats/messages are aimed at a 15 year old level - is your child ready for that?  Please, if your child has signed up for any of these, take the time to look at the parental controls or privacy settings.

Carly from Inform & Empower says this........

Our kids need us (village of adults around them) to really step up and…

  • Lean into their world
  • Encourage positive online experience
  • Make the unpopular decisions
  • Hold the line with boundaries that keep them safe
  • Tolerate big feelings from our kids when we do
  • Supervise their screen time in age appropriate ways
  • Have the uncomfortable conversations
  • Call out unhealthy messages online
  • Advocate for platforms to take much greater responsibility

Public Service Announcement: Roblox

FACT: Roblox is the #1 game in primary schools (from K all the way to Year 6) in 2023. For that exact reason we will not stop sharing and advocating for greater parental understanding of the risks and dangers it is presenting to OUR children on a daily basis.

If you are in Australia, the eSafety Commissioner as well as the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation are the authorities to which any concerning content and or behaviour online should be reported.

The Kids Helpline Official is also an amazing (free) counselling and support service! You can visit their website, email for advice or engage directly via webchat.

ROBLOX UPDATE 2023*

The #1 game for primary school students has recently changed their parental control settings. We have jumped in and done the hard work for you and updated our popular step by step guide for parents.

We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that all primary school aged children who are allowed Roblox to:

  • play in a supervised area of the house
  • have lots of open and curious conversations with you (their parent/carer) about online safety
  • have parental controls enabled within the game settings (see blog post below for instructions)
