Canberra Camp

Written by Year 6 Students, coordinated by Elly, Year 6 teacher

The Year 6 students had an amazing, fast paced and really informative time at the Canberra 5-day Camp. Hear what some students thought about the experience.

The bus ride was loooong, but our bus driver Mark made us more entertained by putting on movies and more fun things. On Day 2 we woke up early in the morning and had a peaceful walk to the

reptile zoo. We got to pet snakes and crocodiles - a bit scary but exhilarating! Next, we went to the National Art Gallery where we got to look at famous artworks and hear stories.

After that, we went to the Museum of Democracy and finally we went to Questacon. We enjoyed looking at how Earth works. It was really informative. Here, we went to the fun room where there were games and a free fall. It was the best! Finally, we finished off the night with bowling.

This is Day 3. Everyone woke up around 6:30am to get ready and eat the breakfast the amazing people at the lodge made for us. We then went on a bus drive to Parliament House. We saw the House of Representatives and Senate speaking at Parliament House. The tour of Parliament really helped get a visualisation of where everything is and what each room really looked like.

In the afternoon, we hopped on the bus and drove to Anzac Parade. We walked past quotes, messages and statues representing the people who had served in the wars. It was very moving. Inside the War Memorial, we saw planes that were used in battle and we learned about people who helped and served in the war. They were so very brave. Last but not least, we went to Laser tag and had a ball, and that was day 3!

This is Day 4!  We all woke up early to prepare for a long day. We made our way to go get breakfast, it was good like always. The bus took us to look at Ainsley lookout where we got a really good view of Canberra from above.

We all went back on the bus to journey to Geoscience where we saw some amazing rocks including the moon rock!

After lunch, it was bus time again to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). We got a tour of the place and went to the gift shop. Our final camp activity was a long bike ride around a lake. It was very pretty! That was the end of our camp.

Support for the Canberra camp

Australian students are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government has contributed funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate will be paid directly to the school.
