Secondary Notices

A great start
It has been wonderful to see our new students make such a great start to their time at Calrossy. While there have been a number of new students throughout the Secondary
School, Year 7 are certainly the biggest cohort of fresh faces ever to join Calrossy. It has been excellent to see friendships being formed, nerves eased and confidence growing. For the younger students, the first few days of orientation are designed around the theme of belonging and connection. Therefore, Year 7 have had opportunity to learn about the School’s 103 year history.
They have connected with older students and most importantly with each other. With such a great start (despite the interruptions of COVID), it looks like 2022 is shaping up to be another fantastic year in the life of our school. We look forward to a wonderful year for all in our community.
Student Leadership
Student voice and leadership is an important component at Calrossy. Leaders at 7 – 9 and Year 12 have been prominent in Orientation activities and assemblies in the first few days of 2022. We look forward to their further contribution to our community. All new Leaders will be officially inducted next Monday 7th February. Due to COVID the event will be slightly modified and parents of elected leaders will be informed of arrangements that will allow them to participate and be part of this important occasion.
Secondary Parent Welcome Events
We look forward to providing information and a special welcome to parents over the next few weeks, supporting the partnership between school and home that will promote best outcomes for students. Information will be provided on student wellbeing, academic courses, technology use, general expectations, co-curricular involvement and Year group expeditions amongst other important details. The following events are scheduled:
· Monday 7th February for 7 – 9 parents
· Monday 14th February for 10 – 12 parents
To minimise adult contact at the start of this year, we are opting to present each event live online. (Links will be provided). This will allow participation of Boarder parents. Opportunities to meet staff are an important feature of such events and so we will look to enable this to happen later in the year.
Swimming Carnivals
These important events in the life of our school are coming up very quickly, on Thursday 10th February. We look forward to the rivalries, competition and fun that will be part of these much anticipated events. We plan to hold the events (they are outside) but with modifications to minimise COVID risks. Parent attendance will be restricted with details to be provided early next week.
Leadership Team
We are excited to introduce a new member of the Leadership Team this year, Julia Boland, who has started as the Head of Senior Secondary (Years 10-12). She comes to us from Macgregor State High School (QLD) where she was Deputy Principal. Miss Boland brings special expertise and interest in student wellbeing. Please find a few introductory words from Miss Boland below:
Senior Secondary
In Senior Secondary we continue to build on the foundations of Prep to 9 as we seek to equip young men and women to contribute to the world. This goal permeates all that we do. It means that we look beyond the confines of the curriculum to challenge our students with a range of opportunities to develop 21st century skills. Research shows that this generation of young people will have eight different careers, many in industries that currently don’t exist. As we reflect on this, we become acutely aware of the significance of the skills that our students learn as they navigate running the farm or engaging with industry in VET courses or participating in team sports or many of the other opportunities that Calrossy affords them.
The learning journey is not a linear process. Instead, it is a wrestle with uncertainty, and often fear and failure. At Calrossy our staff body are committed to partnering with our students and learning in partnership. An example of this was today’s Senior Secondary Assembly which was led by our badged Student Leaders. It was wonderful to see our Leaders set their intention for the year and commit to leading our student body through example.
We are excited for the many opportunities that lie ahead in 2022.
Thank you for continuing to partner with us at Calrossy.
Stephen Price - Head of Calrossy 7 - 9
