Head of Junior School

Welcome to Term 1 2022! We have had such a lovely start to the year, and I delight in the beautiful conversations I am able to have with each child. As I have asked, “What did you learn today?” The answers are so varied and insightful, it is a joy to hear.

This year, in the Year of Gratitude at Calrossy, we have started to think about the difference between being thankful and being grateful. In short, thankfulness is short-lived, it is a feeling, whereas being grateful is an action where we can show an appreciation of kindness. For example, this morning I was thankful for my negative RAHT test, but I am grateful for the generosity given to us for the provision of RAHTs in our school communities and the on-going health of those around us.  Or in your household the children might have been thankful for a yummy breakfast, but when being grateful they may express deep appreciation for the food they can so feely access.

Thankfulness leads to gratitude and gratitude leads to thankfulness. They’re not mutually exclusive. The reason we want to draw attention to gratitude this year at Calrossy is because gratitude counteracts our negativity bias, it builds resilience and fosters a community of kindness.

At home, start with being thankful and then see where these conversations flow – can you counteract the negativity bias?

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Hot Tip:

If your children are coming home tired and grumpy after school, relaxing in front of the TV isn’t always the best way to recover. Go for a bike ride, jump on the trampoline, or play outside. Exercise changes your mind your body and your mood and can help you to sleep better too.

I look forward to an amazing year ahead.
