Girton Acknowledgements of Country

In 2021, Prefects dedicated themselves to different areas of school improvement. Two Prefect groups came together (Student Voice and Diversity and Inclusion) to compile unique Acknowledgements of Country for the School and for each House.

The Prefects consulted with a range of people including interested students from each individual House, who contributed their ideas for their House's acknowledgement in a group session, providing input from a wide range of year levels. Each acknowledgement was discussed with members of the Dja Dja Wurrung who enthusiastically supported this initiative. The Prefects concluded that the most important thing in compiling an Acknowledgement of Country is to simply say it in your own words and speak from the heart, because many Indigenous Australians see this as more genuine, thoughtful and reflective.

Below is the House Acknowledgement of Country developed for each of the six Houses. With thanks to the following Prefects for the legacy they have created for Girton: Eliza O’Sullivan, Solomon Gibbs, Carina Griffin, Sophia Ginis and Sanjana Jijo.
