From the Head

The tempo of term one school life has well and truly picked up this week with the Senior School Swimming Carnival taking place today.  I recall my first experience of the spectacle of the Spirit Cup, a fitting start to the day because it unites all members of the House.  Placings are less important than the sense of belonging and being part of something bigger than yourself.  It’s a spirit that extends to many parts of the Girton experience, including community service.

Thus far, 2022 has seen the return of all school activities.  Although House and School assemblies are yet to take place I hope, and expect, they are not too far away.  Working with a face mask and living with COVID has allowed us to start this school year with more certainty than we’ve recently known.  I sense the optimism, and appreciation in the staff room and the schoolyard of being back at school.

For my view, the upbeat start to the school year hasn’t come from the comfort of air purifiers or the many sensible health safety measures we are all following.  It comes from the intangible benefit of being in a room, being at school, coming together, learning and living together; living the school and social life that gives us connection, purpose and belonging.
