A reminder that FRIDAY is Library Day at St. Joseph’s! Every student will visit the library on that day and during their class visit students will have the opportunity to browse the selection of books available and choose suitable reading material to borrow for reading at home. It is essential that ALL students have a library bag to ensure the safe transportation of borrowed books between school and home. Library bags protect books from drink bottle leaks and uneaten food scraps. Please ensure your child’s name is clearly marked on their library bag. Borrowed books may be kept at home for two weeks or returned weekly.
The library will be open for students to enjoy on Thursdays and Fridays during the second break. If you would like to take the opportunity to find a quiet corner to read a book, solve a jigsaw, colour a picture or perhaps draw one, you are most welcome to use the library. I look forward to seeing there!
Throughout this school year, there will be a monthly focus on collections of books written by a specific author. The purpose of this procedure is to highlight the number of quality texts available to the students that have been written by distinguished Australian and International authors. For the month of February, the author being highlighted for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 is Pamela Allen, and for Stage 2 and Stage 3 it is Morris Gleitzman.
Pamela Allen is a phenomenon in the world of children's literature. For more than thirty-five years her picture books have enchanted generations of children around the world, and have garnered a glittering array of awards and commendations including six Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards, two New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards, an International Board on Books for Young People Diploma for Illustration, the Margaret Mahy Medal, New Zealand’s most prestigious award for children’s literature, and most recently The Gaylene Gordon Award for a Much Loved Book from the Children's Literature Foundation of New Zealand. Pamela's books are full of the music of language; they are 'fragments of theatre', designed to be read aloud and shared between an adult and a child.
Morris Gleitzman is a bestselling Australian children’s author. His books explore serious and sometimes confronting subjects in humourous and unexpected ways. His titles include Two Weeks With The Queen, Grace, Doubting Thomas, Give Peas A Chance, Extra Time, Loyal Creatures, Snot Chocolate and the series Once, Then, After, Soon, Maybe, Now and Always. Morris lives in Sydney and Brisbane, and his books are published in more than twenty countries.
