Mooroopna Flats

Year 7s visit The Flats

Yorta Yorta Elder Uncle Leon Saunders recently spoke to 7A, 7B, 7G and 7H students about the history of the Mooroopna Flats. Students heard ancestral accounts about how the Murray River was made, and learned how the area was used for smoking ceremonies and the initiation of young men.

Uncle Leon also explained the more recent history of the area. He described how people moved there after the Walk Off from Cummeragunja in 1939, and how food supplies were rationed.

Some Year 7s were surprised to learn that Kidstown is built on a rubbish tip. They also especially enjoyed hearing how, as a boy, Uncle Leon came to like golf after his neighbour gave him a set of golf clubs.

Grade 6 Mapping

Grade 6s map the school

Grade 6 students will have little trouble finding their way around school next year. Using an oblique aerial photograph and some colourful shapes, they used their orientation class to construct maps of Wanganui. They also learned about the kinds of topics they’ll cover in Year 7 Geography and Year 7 History.
