PHOENIX NETBALL

We had a record number of teams enter the Phoenix Mixed Netball lunchtime competition for 2015. In total 28 Senior and Junior teams battled it out for their respective titles. The Phoenix competition was started at McKinnon in 2011 to provide male and female students with an opportunity to play organised sport at lunchtime. Traditionally played in Term 3, Phoenix is a mixed netball competition where three boys and four girls take to the court. Another modified rule is that substitutions can be made after any goal. The competition is named after the former Victorian netball team, Melbourne Phoenix.

The junior competition (Year 7 - 9) was fierce and fun with so many talented teams fighting it out to make the finals. We had teams from Year 7 and Year 8 make it all the way to the Semi-Finals, a great effort. In the end, the Final was played between the Ferrets and The Dream Team. In an epic final the Dream Team managed to score in the final minute to win 12 - 11! The Grand Final Most Valuable Player was Anna Donnelly.

The winning players from The Dream Team were:

Lachie Arneil, Alex Hunter, Tim Mullane, Evie Krieger, Erin Thit, Brianca Tran, Sienna Herterich, Anna Donnelly

The Senior Grand Final will be played Friday at lunchtime in the Gym between the staff team and two for five and five for nine.

LACROSSE

Congratulations to our two Senior Lacrosse teams who played in the Schools Victoria Lacrosse Competition on Monday 7 September at Paisley Park, Altona.  This is the first time the school has entered the competition.

The Senior Boys team, whilst not having the expertise, certainly had the endeavour.  With much pride they found themselves in the final of the B competition. Unfortunately, Bendigo was too strong and our boys came 2nd.

For many of the Senior Girls team, they had waited at least two years to be able to represent the school in lacrosse.  They have been playing since Year 7 with our local Caulfield Lacrosse Club through our community partnership programme. The girls were unlucky not to have made the final in the A division. They convincingly won the Bronze Medal match.

Well done to all students for being such great ambassadors for the school and playing with such great sportsmanship.  Thank you to Liam and Ben Symons from CLC for assisting on the day.

JUNIOR SPORT

Term 4 sports are well underway.

The school has entered four teams into the Schools Victoria Lacrosse competition for the first time on Friday 30 October in Altona. More information about the competition will come from the coaches in the next few weeks.

Our main interschool competition this term for many is the Alternative Sports Gala Afternoon.

Year 7:  Tuesday 10 November from 12 noon - 3:00pm

Year 8:  Friday 13 November from 12 noon - 3:00pm

The following sports will be played:

  • Ultimate with Ultimate Victoria at McKinnon Reserve

The following Term 4 sports of Golf, Swimming and Fitness at the Gym require an extra payment. This payment is due by Week 3 of this term. Please make payment directly to the Bursar.

As a part of the School’s SunSmart Policy, we are enforcing the wearing of hats for all students playing an outside sport.  The hats (bucket or peak) are available from the uniform shop. Please ensure it is labelled as all our Year 7-10 students are required to wear a hat for Physical Education classes. Please encourage your child to have a water bottle for all PE/Sport sessions.

Good Luck to all teams in the Preliminary and Southern Metropolitan Region Finals in the upcoming weeks.
