ANZAC Spirit Award
Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize Award Ceremony
Last term, Year 9 student Ryan Schwarz was announced as a winner in the Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize for 2019. Ryan was one of more than 1000 students in South Australia who entered this competition earlier this year.
The Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize is open annually to all Year 9 and 10 students in South Australia. Those who participate are required to identify, research and write a report about a serviceman or woman on active service during the 20th century, and to demonstrate how that person embodied the ANZAC Spirit. It is an expectation of the competition that participants study a lesser known individual from one of these conflicts, i.e. a person whose experiences have not been a focus of significant publication in the past.
Ryan’s entry focused on the contributions of Sergeant William Faint, who served in the 10th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force at Gallipoli and the Western Front in World War I.
As an award winner, Ryan will join fifteen other Year 9 and 10 students who hail from various secondary schools around the state on a fully funded fourteen day escorted tour of Vietnam in the upcoming school holidays.
On Friday 5 July, Ryan was presented with his award by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le, Governor of South Australia, at a special ceremony at Ayers House.
The tour to Vietnam will provide the opportunity for the winners to examine and understand the nature of the conflict that was fought there, and also the many sacrifices made by Australian defence personnel in the service of Australia.
Once again, the College community heartily congratulates Ryan on his outstanding achievement. In the coming weeks we look forward to hearing more about the preparations he will be making for his trip to Vietnam.
