Killara School Partnership

Student Voice Video Conference

On Monday 21 November (Keeva O’K, Viann S, Leo W) took part a zoom conference for all school leaders in the Killara Schools Partnership area. The topics that were talked about were extracurricular activities at KHS and conversations on Indigenous knowledge. Many conversations were sparked as the Social Justice Committee talked about their ideas while also seeking ideas from the primary school leaders.

One of the focus questions was “What extracurricular activities do you offer at Killara High School?” and “How do we encourage students to get involved?”. The SJC mentioned that Killara High offers many CAPA opportunities including bands and dance groups. There are over 25 different extra curricular activities. The students also talked about the new Killara Academy which involved speakers and how it has benefited thinking on jobs and science. The primary school students were interested as they asked “which extracurricular was popular?”. Advice was given that joining extracurricular activities was a way to make long lasting friendships and having fun is key to enjoying Killara High School.

Another topic that was discussed was “How to integrate Indigenous knowledge and history into day-to-day school life”. Many members from the SJC said schools should acknowledge first nations peoples’ laws and customs to learn about their rich culture. The SJC thought we should all cherish a culture that has been on the planet for thousands of years. The council also mentioned that seeing the mistakes generations made before us can make us mend the past. ‘Always was, Always will be’ was a key message. Primary school students agreed as their thoughts were also spoken during the KSP.

Overall, l would like to thank Ms Dixon and Miss Saliba for organising such a meaningful event as these topics were very vital to discuss for both primary and secondary leaders.

Visual Arts Workshop Year 3

On Wednesday 23 November Killara High School welcomed students from Roseville, Gordon East and Lindfield Public Schools to take part in an exciting clay workshop. The hands-on experience gave the students a chance to see what happens in the high-school art program with the assistance of four Year 9 art mentors and Mrs Berry. "I love this art workshop!" - Year 3 student.

All the students made a set of ceramic bowls imprinted with various botanicals, using a process that involved cutting a circle out of clay, rolling leaves onto a slab and pressing it into a shape. They also made a mug. The ceramics will be sent to the schools once they have been fired and glazed. It was a wonderful experience for all involved.

Science Workshop Year 4

On Tuesday, Year 4 girls from Lindfield East, Killara and Beaumont Road Public Schools came to Killara High School to participate in the Girls in Science program 2022. They worked collaboratively with the Year 8 helpers to experiment with bath bombs and orbees (transparent, water absorbing beads). They learnt the skills of working scientifically as they trialed different proportions of bath bomb ingredients to create the perfect recipe.

The girls also experimented with orbees to investigate how they reacted with light, colour and in different environments. The program was used to inspire young girls to pursue their interests in STEM subjects. The event was a huge success, unlocking their future love for science. The teachers and Year 8 mentors were impressed with the enthusiasm and engagement of the Year 4 students.
