2024 Year 9 Impact Program

Mark Williams, Dean of Year 9 Impact Program

The 2024 Year 9 Impact Program started on December 1 with the first of two EMERGE Fridays.

We spent the morning defining our shared expectations and discussing safe travel. Following this, we ventured into the city to hone our skills in preparation for the upcoming year.

Winner of the KYD School Writing Prize

Congratulations to Claudia Sherman, Year 12, who took out the prestigious Kill Your Darlings (KYD) School Writing Prize this year.

Claudia's entry, 'Slipping Away', is a short story inspired by her literature study. It's a sensitive and sophisticated depiction of a daughter reflecting on her childhood while also carrying the complex weight of caretaker responsibilities for an aging mother living with dementia.

Kilvington’s Academic Dean of English, Sonia Murr, had this to say about Claudia's win:

'This award is a very big deal, and I'm delighted that Claudia's coursework in literature was appreciated by the editors at KYD. Claudia's characterisation of the mother/daughter relationship is deeply moving and shows maturity and restraint. She writes convincingly in a second person narrative voice, and as any writer of fiction will know, this is extremely difficult to get right. I'm so proud of Claudia's achievement; she worked really hard on this!'

Claudia won a cash prize for her efforts, along with mentorship from the KYD Journal’s editing team, and was also added to the Wheeler Centre’s 2023 Teen Gala lineup held this past Saturday.

Swannie Award

Nicola Devlin, Academic Dean of Humanities

Congratulations to Maria Wang, Year 11, who recently won a Swannie Award for A Grade DAV for our region.

The Swannie Awards are named after Alan Swanwick, a long-time member of the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) and a pioneer of debating in Victoria.

'Swannies' are awarded to the speaker in each region and grade who has the highest average speaker score after completing at least two debates during the year. The average is calculated solely on speaker scores, and is not affected by the best speaker awards that are announced at the end of each debate.
