Aboriginal Education
School Spectacular was definitely spectacular
Last week 7 students from years 8-11 represented KKHS in State School’s Spectacular at Qudos Bank Arena in the Aboriginal Dance Ensemble. A tiring week with lots of early mornings and long days of rehearsals were involved. It was all worth it to be able to work with the youth team from Bangarra Dance Theatre! What an amazing opportunity! We are so proud!
A focus on Aboriginal culture
Week 8 had a special focus on culture for all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
For our Dream Together program, all our Year 7 to 10 girls had the chance to re-connect with their mentors and continue their journey to become self-reliant and empowered to believe in themselves and their dreams. The week finished for the girls with a dance workshop for Years 7 & 8 and a weaving workshop incorporating a Aunty Dawn an Elder who shared stories and advice about connecting with culture for Year 9 and 10 girls.
The JAECG worked with Deadly Ed to create a legacy project of an amazing mural to go in the new foyer area near the Attendance Office. The group worked collaboratively to create the story behind the mural to tell their stories and that of the connection between the Awabakal, Wonnarua and Darkingjung peoples and the land on which our school lies.
To round off a week of culture, the boys had the opportunity to participate in a Yidaki (Didgeridoo) playing workshop where I think a few of the boys surprised themselves with their hidden talent to play and really engaged in the workshop.
The photos below really tell the story from this weeks cultural focus:
