Community Gardening Day
Last Saturday morning we had over 35 parents, grandparents, students, dogs and staff participate in a weeding and planting session on the west bank of the College. Thanks to the group’s hard work we were able to clear a large section of the bank of invasive weeds and replace them with 50 native trees and shrubs. The trees and shrubs are a mixture of banksias, grevilleas, hakeas and kangaroo paws. All are native to the local area, drought tolerant and provide food and shelter for the local fauna. A huge thanks to all who contributed to an enjoyable and productive morning. This was the second community planting for the year. We will hopefully be conducting another community planting next term.

Year 11 Politics & Law Excursion
On Tuesday, our first class of Year 11 Politics & Law students attended the law courts and Parliament. This excursion provides students with the opportunity to observe our legislature and judiciary at work – broadening and advancing their understanding of the court system and the processes and procedures undertaken by Parliament for effective governance.
In the morning, the students met with the Chief Justice of Western Australia, Mr Peter Quinlan - who invited the students to watch a Supreme Court of Appeal trial. The students then proceeded to the District Court to watch a high-profile jury trial. This afforded students an invaluable learning opportunity to compare the process of an appeal trial with that of a trial on first instance. Students also participated in an empty court activity in the Supreme Court – testing their knowledge of courtroom layout and the roles of court personnel – before going to the Magistrates Court to view a bail application via video link from Hakea Prison.
In the afternoon, students attended the Parliament of Western Australia where the Speaker read Governor Chris Dawson’s statement proclaiming King Charles III as the ruling monarch of WA. The last time such a proclamation was issued within the Parliament was when the late Queen ascended to the throne 70 years ago. Following a brief statement made by Premier Mark McGowan, a motion was moved to prorogue parliament for a week as a mark of respect. What a historic moment for our students to be a part of, and certainly one that will be remembered for years to come. Many thanks to Miss Lucia Queiros for her assistance on the excursion.

Oishii obento!
Two weeks ago, the Year 9 Students of Japanese put on aprons and headed to the Commercial Kitchen to cook and design their very own ‘obento’ or traditional Japanese lunch box.
The students had great delight marinating chicken in miso paste and sake, before grilling it. Whilst marinating the chicken, the students made a crunchy salad out of carrot straws and thinly sliced Chinese cabbage, dressed with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt. In addition, the students made an ‘onigiri’ rice ball coated with sesame seed. With the meal prepared, the students were then challenged to design the most appealing traditional obento. The final ‘obento’ were of a very high standard and looked totally delectable. As is customary in Japan, we all commenced the meal saying 'itadakimasu', ate with chopsticks and finished with 'gochisou sama deshita'. Congratulations to all the Japanese students on their excellent culinary skills and fine behaviour.

Una pizza deliziosa!
This term, the Year 9 Italian students have been learning about ‘al ristorante’. They have learnt how to place an order, discuss likes and dislikes, the ingredients, and names of typical dishes in Italian. Today, they were fortunate enough to create and enjoy an Italian pizza as well as enjoy an authentic Italian drink, an aranciata. In class, they discussed the typical ingredients found on an authentic Italian pizza and what ingredients are always left out!
The students have been encouraged to go home and practice their Italian and pizza making skills and create their own masterpieces with their families. Well done to all the Italian students and to Prof Cinini for their enthusiasm and exceptional cooking skills.

ACC A Division Athletics Carnival
What a day our ACC Athletics team had on Wednesday at the ACC A division Carnival. We began the season with the goal to continue with our teams success and stay in the top three of the prestigious A Division Carnival. With what was possibly the most injuries and sickness effecting the team that we have had in recent times, the students embodied our mantra 'One Team, One Dream' with everything that they had. The team had to dig deep with many of our reserves being called upon at the last minute to run, jump and throw.
It was amazing to witness our team’s heart and soul on the track. No student left anything out there, and we could not be more proud of how they stepped up for those that couldn’t. John XXIII College were announced winners of the Senior Boys shield and finished placed third overall, just 17 points off second place. We have well and truly consolidated our place in A Division after coming second by only four points last year!! As a College, we are so proud of each and everyone of these students. Our senior students lead the team with great compassion and example on the day and we are grateful for their wonderful efforts.
The making of this day and team is not possible without the time and effort our amazing coaches and staff put into our team. We cannot thank you enough for the work and time you have invested.
