Applied Studies

Year 10

Timber - Year 10 Timber have been busy completing a Research task in an emerging technology in timber. This has allowed the students to understand current trends in the timber industry and focus on how the timber industry is changing. They have also started construction on a cabinet project. This project included a number of tricky timber techniques and complex skills.

Metal - Year 10 Metal - students have almost completed their motorbike quick lift and are about to begin the painting process, which involves sandblasting each component. Students have the opportunity to design and produce a project of their own choice for their next task which is always an interesting time.

Agriculture - Year 10 Agriculture students are in the middle of our Cattle Production unit that started with a Masterchef-style competition where the students prepared and cooked beef and dairy products. The students are currently working on their assessment task where they are allocated a region of Australia and need to select a suitable breed of cattle. This is put together as a video with the students pretending to be livestock and environment experts. A select group of students have also been preparing one of our steers ready for the Wagga Wagga Show later this term.

Food Technology - Students are working through their Current Food Trends learning about why and how foods become fashionable. Their task is to research a current food trend then create a new cafe item for The Petite Coffee Shop using their research as a guide. Students are experimenting with their flavours and enjoying using their skills and imagination to complete the task. This terms practical tasks include walking nachos, sheet pancakes, GiGi pasta and granola bowls.

Graphics - Year 10 graphics have finished their custom 3D printed money boxes with some unique designs produced. The next challenge is nominating and producing a development opportunity for Wagga Wagga. This will include scale models, 3D printing, Laser Cutting and produce a virtual reality walkthrough of their design.

Information Software Technology - IST students have been looking at Multimedia again this term, building on the skills acquired during the Year 9 Multimedia topic. They have been researching recent media trends with a particular focus on social media. This has formed the basis for their project this term: develop a proposal for a new social media platform and use a variety of multimedia tools to present this proposal. Students will need to create a logo, mock-ups of the graphical user interface, an advertisement and more to successfully address the design brief.

Year 12

Design and Technology - With a flurry of action leading up to their deadline, the Year 12 Design and Technology class are ready to submit their Major Design Projects and associated folio. The journey for these students started in October 2021 when they were exploring their initial ideas for their Major Design Project.

This year’s cohort designed and developed a wide range of solutions to design challenges that they had nominated based upon personal experiences and motivations. The Showcase held at school was a great chance for the class to receive feedback and make changes to their design and folio.

Their projects include:

  • An easy clean guttering system
  • A solar dam evaporation solution
  • A smart mailbox for securing large packages

The Design and Technology Major Design Project must include a development portfolio, which for most students was nearly 80 pages in total. These folio’s are an impressive body of work and is evidence that the students were engaged in their work and motivated by the outcomes.

Agriculture - Year 12 Agriculture students have successfully completed their Trial HSC exam with some great results. Students are finishing their final unit; Farming in the 21st Century which looks at the latest technology available to farmers. After this, the students will spend their time on any identified areas for improvement from their Trial exams and practice writing exam responses. They are to be congratulated on their efforts so far and we wish them all the best in their final exam.
