JUNIOR HOCKEY

Division 4

College Crusaders advanced to the Grand Final with a hard-fought win over traditional Division 4 rivals Coleraine Maroon. The 2-1 result was a tight affair, with Coleraine taking the early lead with a well worked goal. Olivia Allen combined with Isabelle Musson to score a terrific short corner goal to bring the teams back to level pegging, just before half time. Natalie Featherston went on a super drive into the D, and scored the winner with 10 minutes to play. The Crusaders back three of goalie Will Ash and fullbacks Emily Ash and Owen Priestly defended brilliantly throughout the match. All 12 players gave their all, and are looking forward to a Grand Final match with Demons.

DIVISION ONE HOCKEY REPORT

After a disappointing loss to Monivae last week, the Thundersticks rebounded sensationally on Sunday to defeat Dunkeld 3-1. The girls will now meet Monivae again in the Grand Final 6:15pm on Friday night.

With Phoebe Sweeney back, the forward line looked a lot more balanced and the girls were on the attack right from the start. Claudia Roberts was back to her best and, with Mrs Williams in career best form, a number of short corners were created early in the game. Mrs Williams eventually broke the deadlock with a clever goal from the post.

The backline, however, fell asleep and allowed Dunkeld to score a very easy goal late in the first half.

Our injured captain Emily Johnston really inspired the girls at half time and goals to Claudia Roberts and Mrs Williams cemented a well-deserved victory to the Thundersticks.

Hannah and Chloe Russell continue to dominate on the half line and with Mrs Nichols, Abby Hayes, Charlotte Boyd Walsh and Beatrice Nesbitt the backline is a difficult one to penetrate. Maddi Mutch, Hannah Nichols and Phoebe Sweeney are all versatile players but have fitted really well into the inner position. Our Captain Emily Johnston should be fit for the Grand Final and that will be a huge bonus.

Despite the 20mls of rain that is forecast late in the week, we would love to see as much College support as possible.

Good luck to the Div 4s, U16 Boys and A Grade men. It is going to be a sensational weekend of hockey.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

College Blue won through to the Grand final with an impressive 4-1 victory over Monivae last Saturday.  Captain Sami Zehir opened the scoring in the first half with a fine solo effort and his goal was all that divided the teams after a tight first half.

Into the second half, a cleverly worked corner saw Jack Green score after being well set up by Ferg Roberts, who scored a goal of his own not long afterwards after receiving an excellent pass.  Monivae got one goal back and, for a while, threatened to score another before Will Manifold, with a fine first time shot after a great Tane Nelson run, put the game beyond doubt.

The boys played their team-oriented game very well, finding each other with effective passes and some hard running.  They should go into next week’s Grand Final with confidence.

Gold prepared to meet them with a final game against the Barbarians, and this provided a fine opportunity to thank the parents and friends of Under 16 boys who have made up this team this year so that a bye was avoided.

They gave our boys a good preparation too!  Jock Adamson and Lachlan Armstrong ended up on the score sheet and the team play which led to each goal was impressive.  Indeed, the boys played some very fine hockey around the ground and, with this run, they too can be confident about next week.

So the two Under 16 teams meet next Saturday morning – a Premiership is definitely in the bag!  Who will it be?  This is the third year in a row that two College teams have squared off for the boys’ title: in each of the previous two the result has come with the final play of the day.  This year promises to be as tight so we’d love to see plenty of support for both teams.  “C’mon College” will be a safe cry!  Stay and support the Division 4 team afterwards.

Last Sunday afternoon, in their first daylight match of the season, the Open team met Demons in the Preliminary Final.  This was a tense affair and we conceded the opening goal and then fell behind again 1-2 late in the first half.  Josh Nichols, who played an excellent Captain’s game, had scored our first with a cleverly worked corner involving some close passes.  He then returned the compliment and created space for Tom Verco to score from another corner.  Harry Musson slotted home our third goal – another corner variation - as we took the lead for the first time with about 15 minutes to go and Tom Verco scored the goal which secured the 4-2 victory with a fine drive.

Goalie Josh Cavill made a superb penalty stroke save midway through the second period and this was a key moment when the game was very much in the balance at 2-2. Will Allen was composed at full back and our midfield group of Nichols, Verco, Liam McMaugh and Nick Lacey ran themselves into the ground, as did Tom Bunge up forward.

This was a very good win in terms of being good preparation for next Friday’s Grand Final but we will want to play better for longer in that game.  We’d value strong sideline support, under lights, for the second of Friday’s matches.  Come along early and support the girls also!
